The Teacher’s Guild at Agnes Scott College is presenting a dramatic reading of Atlanta playwright Marki Shalloe’s Promethea Unlaced, the story of the birth of Mary Shelley and the birth of her famous novel, Frankenstein.

Ms. Shalloe is a local playwright with a penchant for finding stories in unusual places.  “Of daydream and nightmare, always choose the nightmare.  It makes the better tale,” says Shalloe in Promethea.  This play, originally commissioned by Georgia Tech, started first as a story about the Frankenstein myth.

Shalloe said that once her research landed on Mary Shelley’s mother – Mary Wollstonecraft – everything changed.  According to Shalloe, “This woman fought for the emancipation of women in the 18th century, believed in free love before anyone really knew what that was, and knew the most irreconcilable sin is the sin against oneself or self betrayal.”  Shalloe knew then the story that needed to be told:  the legacy of immortality through written expression.

Performances are free and will be held in the Julia Thompson Smith Chapel on the Agnes Scott College campus.  There are two performances – a Tuesday, September 27 performance that includes a wine & cheese reception at 7 p.m., the performance at 7:30, and a talkback with the playwright at 9:30 and a Wednesday, September 28 performance at 7:30 p.m.

Missing Your September Focus?

We have discovered that several of us have not received our September Focus – on several different streets in the city.  According to what we know so far, the Post Office should have received it on September 8.  Typically it only takes a couple of days for me to receive mine once they have been delivered to the post office.

I’m wondering if anyone out there has actually received their September Focus?  Please let us know.  We’re investigating the issue and apologize for the delay!  In the meantime, we have posted the September Focus online.

We are also starting to use a new e-pub technology that allows you to read the Focus like a magazine spread online and also lets you click through to the links immediately rather than our regular page-by-page PDF style.  Click here to read the July/August issue that way.  Once we get the system up and running efficiently (i.e., you can see it by the first day of the month), let us know if you like it!

The production of the Focus includes several critical steps and timing  from several entities – we aim to get it to you the first week of the month and we hate it when we experience extreme technical difficulties of this kind.  Thank you for your patience as we work through this kink.

Decatur is So So So So SAVVY!

The City of Decatur scored four communication & marketing awards at the recent Savvy Awards competition produced by 3CMA – the City-County Communications & Marketing Association –  in Austin, TX in September.

3CMA recognizes the very best in strategic marketing and compelling communications and during its 23 year history, has had more than 10,000 entries which in many cases became the benchmarks for all local government communications efforts.

Decatur won a SAVVY for our new Tourism Website and for our redesign of the Decatur Focus newsletter.  We won a Silver Circle Award (2nd place) for our newly redeveloped City Website and an award of Excellence (3rd place) for our new Welcome to Decatur video.

Thanks to our graphic design partner Lampe-Farley Communications, our website developer Vision Internet, our Video Producer Clout, and to all of you who make up our Decatur community who provide all the great information and content.  We couldn’t do it without all of you!

Check out the photo of our SAVVY swag!

An interfaith gathering on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 will take place on Sunday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. in the ballroom of the Decatur Hotel and Conference Center, 130 Clairemont Ave.  The event is open to all and free of charge.  Parking is available at the hotel for a charge and there is free parking at the First Baptist Church of Decatur.

The 9/11 Interfaith Gathering planning committee includes Atlantans from a variety of faith expressions, including Buddhists, Christians, Hindus, Jews, and Muslims.  The event will remember those who died on Sept. 11, 2001, while seeking to shift combined energies toward the building of relationships between faith communities and across lines that have divided us in the past.

Happy Friday!

Just in time to enjoy this beautiful weather, we have our first September Concert on the Square tomorrow evening!

Please join us for Soulhound on the Community Bandstand from 7:00-9:30pm on Saturday. Bring your chairs, blankets, picnics, and dancing shoes because we are going to have a GREAT night!

Don’t have everything you need for your picnic? Drop by the Decatur Farmers Market tomorrow morning between 9am and 1 pm to get everything you need for a yummy meal.

Have a great weekend Decatur!

Rain, rain go away

We are disappointed to announce that today’s Blue Concert featuring Tommy Talton has been canceled due to weather. All of the rain we have had the last couple of days (and this morning) has left our Square rather soggy. We look forward to seeing you all this Saturday night for Soulhound and again next Wednesday for Angela Easterling & Brandon Turner.

Enjoy the cooler weather and we will see you soon!

Siren Test Today

Today is the first Wednesday of September so we’ll be testing the tornado outdoor warning sirens at 5:00 p.m.   The test should last approximately one minute. Should the weather become inclement like it did earlier this week, the test will be postponed until  Thursday, 8 September 2011.

If you have questions or want more information about the siren system, check out the Siren page on the City’s website or contact Assistant City Manager Tony Parker at 404-370-4102.

Hands on Atlanta will commemorate the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks through service and volunteerism by presenting 9/11 Days of Service. There will be over 100 sites across the metro region September 8 – 11, including a project at Decatur’s PushPush Theater. During the 9/11 Days of Service, volunteers will clean and redesign the theater for the upcoming new production. If you are interested in helping out, register as a volunteer at www.handsonatlanta.org.
