The Holidays are Here!

The lights are on the trees and the wreaths are up all over downtown Decatur! Earlier today, the tree was hoisted up to the top of Little Shop of Stories for Thursday’s Tree Lighting. Things are getting very merry around here!

If you haven’t done so already, run out and buy your Decatur Holiday Candlelight Tour of Homes tickets at Oakhurst Market, Seventeen Steps, Bicycle South, or Intown Ace Hardware. Or, you can click here to buy them online.

Finally, as you drive around town this week, take a picture of your favorite house decorations and email them to us here to nominate them for a Decorate Decatur Award.

Happy Holidays Decatur- see you around town!

The 20thth Annual Decatur Holiday Marketplace & Café will take place Friday, December 2nd from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Saturday, December 3rd from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., in conjunction with the Decatur Tour of Homes. This popular event is held at Clairemont Elementary School, located at 155 Erie Avenue in Decatur, and is free and open to all.

Enjoy Decatur’s holiday spirit as the school transforms into a lively and festive market where more than 95 local and national artists exhibit their wares.  Shop for unique handmade gifts, paintings, glass art, photography, jewelry, pottery and much more.  Be sure to stop by the café for mouthwatering homemade soups and decadent desserts, as well as toe-tapping tunes performed live by local musicians and carolers.

On Saturday afternoon, kids can join in the fun with live children’s music and art activities sponsored by Color Wheel.

This is a not-to-be-missed occasion, and a perfect kick off to the holiday season.  Whether it’s your palette or palate that needs pleasing, you’ll satisfy both at the Decatur Holiday Marketplace & Café!   Proceeds benefit Clairemont Elementary School educational programs.

It's America Recycles Day!

Happy America Recycles Day to all of Decatur!

America Recycles Day, a program of Keep American Beautiful, was created to help improve American’s consumption and recycling habits.  We would like to take the opportunity to thank all Decatur businesses and residents for their commitment to recycling.

Here are some Decatur recycling facts you may not know:

  • In fiscal year 2010-11, Decatur residents recycled over 2,100 tons of materials curbside.  This equated to about 26% of all curbside solid waste being recycled.  With an additional 26% of curbside solid waste being composted as yard waste, the total diversion rate was 52%.
  • Styrofoam can be recycled in curbside bins, provided it is marked with a recycling logo and a #6.
  • Pizza boxes may be recycled in curbside bins as long as they are not contaminated with food waste/grease.
  • The City of Decatur Public Works Department is pleased to be able to provide recycling services to commercial and multi- family properties. Our recycling services include single stream collection of items listed on our website.   For more information, please contact Sean Woodson, Solid Waste Superintendent at sean.woodson@decaturga.com or 404-377-5571.
  • In 2007, the Decatur City Commission approved an amendment to the solid waste ordinance to provide better accessibility for recycling for multi-family residents of the city.  Multi-family property owners and condominium associations must now provide recycling services to their residents that include at least four materials to recycle such as paper, glass, metal, and plastic.  Multi-family properties are not required to use the City of Decatur Solid Waste service and can contract with third party collection companies.
