Siren Test Today

Today is the first Wednesday of March so we’ll be testing the tornado outdoor warning sirens at 5:00 p.m.   The test should last approximately one minute. Should the weather become inclement  today, the test will be postponed until  Thursday, 8 March 2012.

CORE offers “Fun, Fitness & Dance” Classes at CORE Studios
Over your lunch break and after work, CORE is offering a variety of classes for you to jump in to and get a workout. Members of CORE Performance Company and some other CORE friends will be teaching classes. Drop-ins are offered at a rate of $15. Classes include Rumba, yoga, hip hop, Shake It & Stretch It Workout, Dance Sampler, and Go Girls! Click here for more info.

Fitness on Track Classes at Beacon Hill

Walk for Lunch: Tuesday/Thursday
Walk for Lunch is back. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the lunchtime fitness program, it includes power walking and intervals of strength and body toning exercises taught by certified fitness instructors. Walkers will check-in at noon on the square every Tuesday and Thursday beginning March 13 and ending May 31. To register, click here.

Jazzercise
For the month of March, Decatur’s Jazzercise studio located on New Street in East Decatur Station, is offering free classes on Friday and $25 off registration. For more information and a complete schedule, click here.

Hey Decatur! The Publix Georgia Marathon is coming through Decatur on Sunday morning, March 18th and we need all the help we can get. There are several ways you can help…
1. Come out to the intersection of Ponce and Clairemont and join our cheering section. If the runners vote for Decatur as the best cheering section, the Decatur Youth Fund will win $1500!!! So wear green, make noise, and cheer on the runners.

2. Volunteer to help at the water stations. Its tons of fun to cheer and hand out water and orange slices to the runners as they go through our town. Email katie.abel@decaturga.com for more info (This is a great project for groups like scouts, youth groups, or book clubs!)

3.Remind you neighbors! Mark your calendars and remind your neighbors that the race will be coming throgh town between about 8-10am that morning. Click here for all of the route and street closure information

4. WEAR GREEN, CHEER LOUD, HAVE FUN

There’s “Keep Austin Weird,” “Love Asheville,” “Think Local Umpqua,” “Homegrown El Paso,” and so many more “buy local” campaigns around the country. How about Decatur? What slogan would sum up our city’s local love of independent businesses? How do you capture Decatur’s community spirit in just a few words? We want to hear from you! Send in a go local Decatur slogan to us, we’ll pick the best three, and put them up for a public vote online. Get creative!

Send your submission to Catherine.Lee@decaturga.com by March 16. The winning submission will be used in an ongoing marketing campaign for the City of Decatur. The winner will receive two free shirts with his/her slogan and a giftcard to a local restaurant.

LIVING THE GREEN LIFE SPEAKER SERIESYour First Edible Garden

Over the past few years, the interest in living a more green and sustainable lifestyle has grown tremendously. The Oakhurst Community Garden Project, the City of Decatur, and the DeKalb County Public Library are pleased to announce their collaboration on offering you an exciting FREE series of classes in 2012.

In February join Stephanie Van Parys, Executive Director of the Oakhurst Community Garden Project, and learn about spring and summer vegetables and herbs perfect for our region.  It’s a great session intended for first time gardeners, those transitioning to organic methods, or folks who just need to brush up a bit.

PRUNING WITH DANIEL BALLARD

Are you intimidated by pruning?  Does pruning your shrubs feel like cutting your own hair?!  There is hope for your pruning greenthumb.  Join Daniel Ballard, head gardener at Oakhurst Gardens, for an informative class on the basics of pruning.  Topics will include tools of the trade, basic pruning cuts, pruning trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals (including edibles).  Participants should bring a pair of bypass hand pruners and gloves for practice.

The class will be held at EcoAddendum in Decatur. Pruning is a great way to get your yard ready for new spring growth.  So if you rent, own, or dream of having a home in the future, consider coming to this class.  It is only $25 and it will give you the confidence to Do-It-Yourself!

If you are like me, you have been waiting on Friday to arrive for three or four days now. Finally, the day has arrived and this weekend is full of fun things to see and do in Decatur.

Tonight Eddie’s Attic is hosting SUGAR & THE HI LOWS with special guest, EMILY WEST. If shopping is more your thing, head to West Ponce for Fab Friday. Spend tomorrow afternoon at the Oakhurst Wine Crawl and then go over to Feast Resturant and celebrate the great run they had in Decatur. Be sure to tell Teri and Robin thanks for all of the good times and wish them well on future endeavors. In between wine drinking and Feast-ing, stop by Decatur CD for the in-store 3 Lb. Thrill performance at 3:30 p.m. After dinner you can walk up to Church Street for The Seen Gallery opening reception of Voyages, painting by Vickie Martin.

On Friday and Saturday, Decatur City Dance will be performing four shows of A Day With Mother Goose. After each show, cast members will visit with the audience, sign autographs and pose for pictures so bring your cameras!

If you were one of the lucky 1,200 residents randomly selected to receive the 2012 Citizen Survey and you have not mailed it back in yet, there is still time. Survey responses are being collected through Friday, 2 March 2012.

If you didn’t receive a survey this year but still want to be a part of the action, head on over to the City’s Open City Hall forum to to register your opinion about the level of traffic enforcement in the City of Decatur. A third survey question will be posted next week.

This Weekend in Decatur

Jewelry Trunk Show at Green Mosaics

Lots of stuff going on this weekend in Decatur, plus our new visitors center manager, Sherry Jackman, will be on the square (weather permitting) helping to direct visitors, suggest places to go eat and be a smiling face on the MARTA plaza. Think of it as a kind of pop-up shop visitors center. If you’re a resident and know everything there is to know about Decatur, just stop by and say hi!

Decatur Old House Fair – Saturday, Feb. 18., 9 am-5 pm at the new Courtyard hotel. If you haven’t been to the new hotel yet, this is the perfect excuse to go by and check it out.

Storytelling Festival – Feb. 17-18. Events are held at various locations around town.

Get ready to make some noise!

This year, you get to wear your silly green outfits 2 days in a row…once on St. Patty’s Day and again the next day for the Publix Georgia Marathon! The race will come through our city on Sunday, March 18, and Decatur invites you to participate as a hydration and/or cheering volunteer.
Volunteers are needed to staff two Hydration Stations, one at the East Lake MARTA station and one in downtown Decatur. Your duties will be to hand out water to the runners and to cheer them on. To volunteer for the Hydration Stations please contact Katie Abel at katie.abel@decaturga.com.

Cheering Station Volunteers
Volunteers are needed at the official cheering station on Ponce de Leon adjacent to the Old Courthouse Square and should arrive at 7:30 a.m. on March 18 to help cheer the runners on. The City of Decatur has won over $17,000 for having the best cheering section over the years so let’s keep it up! Don your GREEN clothes and come out with noise makers, signs, and/or musical instruments. Let’s make sure the runners never forget Decatur!

The City of Decatur has been awarded the designation of Tree City USA for a 2nd year! The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the USDA Forest Service and the Georgia Forestry Commission in order to recognize successful community forestry programs.

To qualify as a Tree City USA, a town or city must meet four standards.

  1. A Tree Board or Department
  2. A Tree Care Ordinance
  3. A Community Forestry Program With an Annual Budget of at Least $2 Per Capita
  4. An Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation
