9:00am-1:00pm

903 Church Street  Decatur, GA 30030

Bean Work Play Cafe is a co-space for parents and kids – where parents can work and kids can play.  They are located at 134 New Street and are open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.  I receive their e-newsletters and the latest one intrigued me with its special Fall Classes for kids including children’s yoga, introduction to theater, sing-along with Ms. Carol, and Exploring Art.

Children’s Yoga with Ms. Sonata is open to kids from 3 – 6 years and teaches kids to practice basic yoga poses and learn how to gain strength in using these poses in patterns and routines.  Cost is $90 for a 6 week session.

Introduction to Theatre with Shelby Hofer is an introduction to scripted text, live performance, collaborative storytelling, character development and the basics of acting.  Participants work with PushPush Theater and Film Co-founder Shelby Hofer through a series of games that are physical, loud and high-energy.  Cost is $96 for a 6 week session with a maximum class size of 6 children.

Sing-Along with Ms. Carol includes singing and musical instruments including guitar, egg shakers and more.  Song themes include the winter holidays of many cultures such as Diwali, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and more.

And, finally, Exploring Art with Ms. Kingsbury for ages 4-7 will let children explore a variety of art processes and materials to encourage and explore the visual arts.  They say children will have fun, get messy, and gain confidence in their creative choices.

Bean Work Place Cafe is an exciting new concept and well worth taking the time to visit the space.  I understand they rent out their room(s) for birthday parties also.  Even if you don’t sign up for the classes, you should stop by and just see the place.

We’ll be tweeting live from the bandstand! @downtowndecatur

Aware and Prepared

Did you notice the special Emergency Services section inside your November Focus? It’s the orange section right in the middle and it’s chock full of tips and tricks to help you prepare for potential disasters that could occur in & around the City.

In case you missed the print version, you can peruse the Aware and Prepared publication here.

Meeting of the Mayors

Please join the City of Decatur and the City of Avondale Estates in celebrating the merging of our City boundaries on Saturday, November 10th at 12:00 p.m. at Lanier Park located at Sam’s Crossing.  The recent annexation of property along E. College Avenue allowed, for the first time, the boundaries of the City of Avondale Estates and the City of Decatur to meet. The annexation gives both the City of Avondale Estates and the City of Decatur control over the redevelopment of these areas, which are gateways to both cities. The City of Avondale Estates and the City of Decatur are partners in creating  successful, sustainable communities.

Refreshments from local Avondale Estates and Decatur merchants will be provided.

All are welcome to attend

Yep, Halloween is over, November is here, which can only mean one thing: the holiday season has begun! Before you roll your eyes and mumble something to the effect of “The holidays start earlier and earlier every year. Bah! Humbug! ” just keep in mind that you don’t have to go to the mall to get your shopping done. In fact, the holidays can be a downright enjoyable experience if you stay in Decatur.

Visit www.decaturga.com/terrificthursdays to see a list of the specials, discounts and open houses that over 30 local shops and restaurants are hosting in November and December. This year Terrific Thursdays are Nov. 8, 15 & 29 and Dec. 6, 13 & 20, so mark your calendars and spend the evening walking, dining, and shopping with your family.

In addition to Thursday specials, we’ll also be posting non-Thursday events going on around town at www.facebook.com/indiecatur. Go ahead and Like the page so you can stay on top of what’s happening around town.

This year we’ll also be celebrating Small Business Saturday on Nov. 24. More on that in a future post.

Know of anything we left off? If so, make sure to Tweet about it with #indiecatur to help spread the local Decatur love.

Remember, Keep It Indie-Catur this holiday season!

Three of the Little Free Libraries that were auctioned off at the 2012 Decatur Book Festival were installed this week. Patrick Grier from the City’s Public Works Department built the stands and installed them around town. The first one is in front of City Hall:

There’s a second one installed in Harmony Park (photo coming soon) in Oakhurst and a third library purchased in honor of the Book Festival’s first board chair, Alice Murray, is in front of Dancing Goats:

We added a handful of books to each library yesterday and they’re already almost empty. Help us out by stocking them with some of your own books that you’d like to share – otherwise we’ll just keep filling them with our management books and there’s only so many times you can read Good to Great.

A handful of Decatur residents bid and won the other Little Free Libraries at the Book Festival. If you know where those libraries are installed in Decatur, let us know by leaving a comment on this post.

For more information about Little Free Libraries, visit this website.

Happy reading!
