What to do with your weekend

Just in case you haven’t over-scheduled yourself with yoga, ballet classes, soccer games, and other weekend filler- you may want to think about a few of these options this weekend:

* The Nalley Tree Festival is Saturday on the Square from 12-3:00pm. There will be fun for the kids, cool eco-friendly shopping, live music, and FREE trees!

*Chinese New Year Celebration at Little Shop of Stories-Join us as we ring in the new year with our annual storytime featuring crafts, snacks, and stories celebrating Chinese New Year! 2013 is the Year of the Snake, so we’ll also be reading books about slippery, slithery snakes. Don’t miss this fun, cultural celebration.   Sunday, 3pm

*Don’t forget Valentine’s Day is next Thursday! You should probably call and make reservations at your favorite Decatur restaurant or order a yummy cupcake from Sugar Moon Bake Shop in Oakhurst!

Siren test today

Today is the first Wednesday of February so we’ll be testing the tornado outdoor warning sirens at 5:00 p.m. The test should last approximately one minute. Should the weather become inclement  in the next little bit, the test will be postponed until Thursday, 7 February 2013.

Oakhurst  Wine Crawl Tickets are here! Available at Universal Joint and Oakhurst Market for $30 – cash only please! This great event benefits Oakhurst festivals and programs and is held Saturday, February 23 from 4-7 pm.

Nalley

 

Decatur is hosting the third-annual Nalley Tree Festival on Saturday, February 9, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Decatur Square. Nalley will be distributing free one-gallon trees during the festival, which will feature a live band; children’s activities; local sustainable artisans; and educational workshops from municipal and environmental organizations.

The Nalley Tree Campaign is a three-year initiative led by Nalley BMW, Nalley Infiniti and Nalley Nissan in Decatur, Georgia. This spring, the campaign will meet its goal of planting 10,000 trees within the City of Decatur and DeKalb County. The campaign started in 2011 and has proven a tremendous success among partners and locals.

ohf-email-sig4Its time for the Decatur Old House Fair again!  In its 5th year, this event is a one of a kind event in the Southeast and offers owners of historic homes the chance to learn from experts on all sorts of old house issues like basement moisture, restoring historic chimneys and fireplaces, energy efficiency, and tax credits for older homes.  In addition, we have our short bites and style bites (30 minute sessions) that will explain electrical, plumbing, wood floors, aging in place along with delving into styles of homes like Craftsman, American small, American Foursquare, and Ranch.  So many sessions with so much information!

But wait!  There’s more!  We have an exhibit area filled with craftsmen, contractors, and specialty tradespeople that love old houses and provide great services to historic homeowners.  Meet, greet, and walk away with a treat at the Decatur Old House Fair

Church Street mapAs part of ongoing efforts to eliminate flooding in downtown Decatur, storm drainage improvements will begin shortly on North McDonough Street, East Maple Street, Church Street and East Trinity Place. The project includes the replacement of undersized and deteriorated storm drain facilities in these streets. Work is expected to start at Decatur High School on February 9 and to last about nine months.

The inaugural Decatur Biggest Loser Fitness and Weight-loss Challenge is a six-week program to build healthy habits and encourage the Decatur community to live a healthier lifestyle. Winners in the men’s and women’s categories will each win $500 in cash and $400 in CertaPro Painters gift certificates for painting services.

The contest kicks off with a weigh-in at Leapin’ Lizards, 185 Sams St. in Decatur on Saturday, Feb. 2,, 7-10:30 am. Registration is $20 (must be 18 to participate), and includes a weight loss information packet and water bottle. Five dollars from each registration benefits the Decatur Education Foundation. All body weights will be kept private – progress will be tracked via percentage. Participants can sign up for rigorous four-week bootcamp workouts at Pinnacle Fitness for only $40. Be among the first 10 to register, and CertaPro Painters will pay the tab (new customers only). Early weigh-in is available on Wednesday, Jan. 30, 6-8 pm.

For participants with children, Leapin’ Lizards offers a half-off general admission to their play and party center when they open at 10 am on weigh-in day Feb. 2.
