Now that the weather is warming and more and more people are out walking, pedestrian safety, particularly in designated crosswalks, is critical.

On May 2 the Decatur Police Department implemented a crosswalk education and enforcement activity between 11:25 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. at four crosswalks located in the city:  Church Street at E. Trinity Place, Sycamore Street at N. Candler Street, Church Street at Sycamore Street, and 300 block of Church Street.

During that time officers issued a total of 13 citations and 3 warnings – 11 of the citations were issued to drivers who failed to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk, 1 for failure to maintain lane, and 1 for making an improper left turn.  The 3 warnings were for an inoperable brake light, improperly stopping in the roadway, and stopping on a crosswalk.

Drivers stopped for pedestrian crosswalk violations received a pamphlet created by the PEDS organization and the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to educate drivers about pedestrian crossing.

Remember that pedestrians have the right of way in crosswalks; slow down when approaching a crosswalk and watch for pedestrians; and be mindful of both pedestrians and cyclists when driving.

Don’t forget that the DeKalb County Fallen Police Memorial is today on the Square from 10-11am and the Blue Sky Concert featuring Kris Youmans Band will take place from noon-1pm on the Community Bandstand. Today is a beautiful day to be outside in our beautiful City!

DeKalb County will hold a Fallen Police Officer Memorial tomorrow, May 8th from 10:00-11:00 am at the DeKalb History Center (Old Courthouse on the Square.)

The memorial service brings together surviving family members, police officers, elected officials, community groups and friends for a day to commemorate the lives of our fallen heroes. The event is open to the public and will include a 21 gun salute.

storm water

Work bogged down last week as the contractor dealt with a conflict between a large underground telephone cable and the new water line as well as the need to shore up the sidewalk area next to the LexTechs shop at North McDonough and East Maple. AT&T will replace the telephone cable.  The shoring required drilling holes in the street and lowering I-beams 30 feet into the ground.  Steel plates or wood lagging will be installed next week between the I-beams.

Once the shoring is in place, installation of the new  54” storm line will continue.  As soon as the work clears the intersection, 4 lanes of North McDonough Street will be repaved.

Traffic control measures will remain in place on North McDonough Street, so expect traffic delays.
