Santa at Greene's Fine Foods

Santa at Greene's Fine Foods

Santa was spotted strolling around downtown Decatur during Terrific Thursday and brought smiles to the faces of shoppers and, of course, children of all ages. He stopped by Greene’s on the corner of Trinity and Church Street and delighted the children who were there to make Holiday Crafts. Santa made his way down Church Street, and stopped to sing a song with carolers at the MARTA Station entrance, then after stopping in at Mingei and Java Monkey, rounded the corner and posed with the Flamingo in front of Natural Body Salon on Ponce.

Santa will be in Decatur again this Thursday night visiting shops during Terrific Thursday and  at the Bonfire and Marshmallow Roast on the Square. The bonfire is from 7 until 8 pm and Santa will be available for photos on the Bandstand. Join in singing your favorite holiday songs with the carolers. The Bonfire is sponsored by the Decatur Business Association and local businesses.

Chicken Wings

Chicken Wings

We had the great pleasure of having lunch at Steinbeck’s today and trying out their new menu. There is a “bar menu” and a”brunch menu”, as well as “Daily Specials” on the chalkboard. There were enough of us that we got to sample many of the items and they were all delicious!. The chef, Andy Gonzalez, explained that all of the food is made fresh and specials change daily. I had the fried chicken, a large split breast that came with kale and the best stone ground grits I have ever tasted. Other items sampled by our group included the blue cheese fries, yummy pimento cheese, liver pate, smoked chicken wings, a fried bologna sandwich and pork tacos. Luckily we had a hungry group!

Steinbeck’s features a full bar and a new wine list, but since it was lunchtime we didn’t  sample that. Makes a good excuse to go back and try out some more of the menu items.
Hope to see you there soon.

I have seen all of the Hometown Hero presentations since the first one in 1996 and everytime I get chills.  We have now honored 205 people who have given extraordinary amounts of time and effort to make our community a better place to live, work, and play.  And that is just the tip of the iceberg.

These are folks who don’t necessarily receive accolades and recognition for their efforts – they do it quietly and behind the scenes and we benefit enormously.  This year the City Commission presented 18 Hometown Hero medals and you can read their profiles on Decatur’s webpage.

In the meantime, check out their photo with the City Commissioners at the award ceremony and see if you can pick out them out:  Ann Berg, Carl Black, Erin Braden, Herb Chereck, Mike Curtice, Laura Deming, Jim & Matthew Dickson, Scott Drake, Ron & Kathleen Everett, Spencer Johnson, Chuck & Charlie Lewis, Nonie Ravenberg, Rhett Rhame, Jerry G. White, and Janie Yorker.

Way to go Hometown Heroes – you rock!
