Hi All:

I normally just post about preservation and permitting, but today I had such a great meal at Garlic Thai that I had to change my content!

This little gem is located at 340 W. Ponce de Leon Avenue.  The Thai food is so good and the lunch special prices are great.  For $7 we got a cup of excellent coconut soup with fresh mushrooms and scallions and a huge plate of Pad Thai with both chicken and shrimp.  Now I know some people consider Pad Thai a bit “pedestrian” but this was so fresh and the seasonings were just perfect.  We also split an order of calamari tossed with a sweet chili sauce.  The puffy little rings literally melted in our mouths.  The owner and staff were delightful too.  You must try this place out!

After you are done eating at Garlic Thai, waddle next door to the New Orleans Snoball place.  They are amazing and in this heat, this icy treat hits the spot.  The owners are fantastic too.

Decatur is one great place to eat!

One of the fabulous bungalows on Ponce de Leon Court

Next stop-the National Register of Historic Places!

Several residents of Ponce Court attended a hearing on June 4th at the Georgia State Historic Preservation Office and were given the great news that their neighborhood is considered worthy to be listed on the Georgia Register of Historic Places.  One of the attendees was 82 year old Graham Thomas who lived on the street from 1920-1940.  Next, the district nomination will be sent to the National Register of Historic Places in Washington DC where the nomination will hopefully be accepted and Ponce Court will be listed as an important historic district in the United States.

The proud and happy residents can now take advantage of significant property tax relief programs and income tax credits made available to properties listed on the Georgia and National Registers of Historic Places.

Interested in having your historic neighborhood placed on the National Register?  Check out this website www.gashpo.org and contact me, your friendly neigbhorhood Preservation Planner, at regina.brewer@decaturga.com.

Only in Decatur!

You never know who you will run into in Decatur. While scouting out the Old Courthouse on the Square for Book Festival activities, Daren Wang, Mary Flad and Dave Shallenberger ran into Roy Barnes. Of course, this was a perfect photo opportunity. I wonder if Mr. Barnes has written a book and could be one of the featured authors at the September Book Festival!
