Weekend on the Cheap

One of the greatest things about Decatur is that you don’t have to be rich to live the good life. I am always amazed at the amount of fun you can have “on the cheap.”

Today and tomorrow, you can shop ’till you drop at Decatur First United Methodist Church’s Kid’s Used Clothes (and Stuff) Sale. I have been to this sale and let me tell you, it is a goodie!  Shoppers will find incredible bargains on an enormous selection of high-quality clothes (size newborn through size 18) plus toys, books, sports equipment, kids’ furniture, baby supplies, accessories, maternity items, and much more. Merchandise from 140 sellers!

Friday, September 10th from 9a.m. to 4:00p.m. and Saturday, September 11th from 8a.m. to 2:00p.m

Also this weekend, you can come out to see Gwen Hughes and the Retro Jazz Kats, a part of the Concert on the Square series. How much does it cost you ask?  FREE!!!!

Join us on the Square every Saturday night in September from 7-9:30pm

UPDATE! I just caught wind of another amazing deal in Decatur…

Mac McGee Irish Pub on the Square  has free Bluegrass with Brother Shine this Saturday, September 11 starting at 2:00pm all day for their 1st Annual Bourbon Festival!

And finally, don’t forget to visit the Decatur Farmers Market tomorrow morning from 9am to Noon. Tons of locally grown fresh organic and sustainable produce, flowers, and other organic and sustainable food products.

Have a great weekend Decatur!

National Preparedness Month is a time to take action and prepare for natural and man-made disasters. Now is as good a time as any to pull together your emergency kit and come up with a family disaster plan. If you need help with either of these things, check out the Emergency Management insert  in last November’s Decatur Focus (and be on the lookout for the update in a few months) or visit the ReadyGeorgia.gov website.

Yes, we have the AJC Decatur Book Festival coming up this weekend and there will be plenty of authors to see and hear and new books to purchase.

However, there is also the annual Friends of the Decatur Library Book Sale on Saturday, September 4 from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. on the front lawn of the Decatur Library, 215 Sycamore Street.  (In case of rain, the sale will be inside the library).

The line forms early as potential purchasers look through items donated from the bookshelves of others – a perfect example of both sustainability and “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.”  Check it out.  All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Decatur Library and their special events for the community such as the Peter Rabbit Tea and the music series.

The City of Decatur Public Works Sanitation Division is working to resolve an issue with a defective Pay-As-You-Throw bag shipment from the bag manufacturer. It appears that the problem is isolated to the green, 8-gallon bags.  We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused. If you have received defective bags please return them to the retail store where they were purchased in order to receive replacement bags. You may also take the defective bags to the Public Works Office at 2635 Talley Street in Decatur and receive replacement bags. We are checking the bag inventory to ensure that defective bags  are not delivered to the retail stores.

If you have any questions, please call David Junger, Assistant City Manager, at 404-377-5571 or email david.junger@decaturga.com .

I’ve been meaning to blog about this for the past few weeks. We’ve added a new, inexpensive, ADA compliant feature to the City’s website. Any webpage within the site that has text on it now has a nifty “Listen” icon in the top right corner. Click on the icon to hear the page read out to you. Of course this feature is primarily for the vision impaired, but feel free to use it if your eyes are tired, you don’t feel like reading or if you’re suffering from digital device overload. This feature will be transfered to the new City website once it’s up and running – which will hopefully be complete by late fall.
