A Message from the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority

Georgia residents again have the opportunity to apply for rebates ranging from $25 to $199 on ENERGY STAR-rated appliances beginning November 17th. Approximately $800,000 in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds remain available for rebates on ENERGY STAR appliances such as clothes washers, dishwashers, air conditioners, heat pumps, furnaces, water heaters, refrigerators and freezers. Purchases made prior to February 12, 2010, are not eligible. During the first phase of the program, 104,971 rebates were approved totaling more than $8.7 million.

“We are excited to provide Georgians who may not have been able to participate in the program earlier this year a second opportunity to receive rebates on the purchase of energy-efficient appliances,” said GEFA Executive Director Kevin Clark.

Following the appliance purchase, customers will be responsible for immediately applying for the rebate at www.GeorgiaRebate.com or by calling toll-free 1-866-296-1633. When the application process is complete, a rebate form will be provided through the website or via U.S. mail if the toll-free number is used to apply. The rebate form and a copy of the sales receipt will then be mailed by the customer to the address on the rebate form. The sales receipt must verify that a qualifying ENERGY STAR appliance was purchased. Qualified appliances must be purchased from a retailer within the state of Georgia. Online and out-of-state purchases do not qualify.

Once the rebate claim is physically received and the receipt is verified, the customer’s rebate will be approved and payment will be mailed. Rebates will be issued in the form of a Visa® Prepaid Card preloaded with the rebate amount within two to three weeks from mailing the required forms and receipts. Guides for retailers and consumers are available at www.GeorgiaRebate.com.

Participants are required to recycle refrigerators and freezers and are strongly encouraged to recycle all other appliances. Recycling arrangements can be coordinated with the retailer or by visiting www.YouGottaBeKidding.org.

The following chart provides a breakdown of the eligible ENERGY STAR appliances and the corresponding rebate levels. For clothes washers, dishwashers and gas storage water heaters, two rebate levels are available due to different energy efficiency ratings.

Decatur Mayor Emerita Elizabeth Wilson and Ethel Steverson are hosting their 9th annual Junque Emporium on Saturday, October 23 from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. in the Big H parking lot over in Oakhurst.  Proceeds from this gigantic yard sale go for tax relief for the elderly in the City of Decatur.

You will find kitchenware, flatware, lamps, bedding, linen, dishes, glassware, rugs, garden tools, small & large appliances, collectable items, office & home furniture.

Go early and grab some of those dishes with Atlanta landmarks printed around the edges.  See if you can find the misspelled word (which explains the abundance of those particular dishes) in the fish-related landmark.  But leave some for me!

If art is your thing, Decatur is the place to be tonight:

First up, The Art Institute of Atlanta-Decatur is opening Just Suppose: The Art of Maggie Taylor and Jerry Uelsmann with a reception in their gallery beginning at 7 p.m.  Jerry Uelsmann creates dreamlike, mystical, black-and-white images using hand-printed multiple negatives.  Maggie Taylor combines vintage photographs, antique toys, and other found objects in her surrealistic digital photomontages.

The exhibition is spread between the Art Institute’s Atlanta and Decatur galleries and is part of Atlanta Celebrates Photography.  The gallery is located at One West Court Square.  The exhibit will run through Nov. 6.

Next, head over to Sycamore Place Gallery (on the corner of Commerce Dr. and Sycamore Place across the street from Carpe Diem), for Art & Poetry Show & Tell hosted by Laurence Holden and Honor Woodard.  The event goes from 7 – 9 p.m.  The gallery opens at 6 p.m. and a $5 cover is requested.  Wine will be offered with a donation.  Water and coffee are free.

You may bring your own refreshments and bottle of wine (only those 21 and over) to get the creative juices flowing.  Cost is $65 with Art Advantage Paint set (includes Mini Easel Acrylic Paint Set with mini easel, 7×9.5 canvas, 3 brushes and a 6 color paint set) or $50 if you use your own materials.  Register now through October 20.  Classes begin Monday, Oct. 25 and run for four weeks.

This just in from Duane, Greg & Nicole and The Decatur Farmers Market

The farmers are bringing lots of delicious nutritious fall produce to the market now.  Lettuces, many different greens, turnips, carrots, potatoes, and sweet potatoes fill their displays.  The other food producers continue to bring their yummy baked goods, salsa, cheeses, cured meats and other prepared foods each week.  When food and other items do not sell, they go in the compost pile, to the chickens, or in the trash.

Since Labor Day there has been a drop off in the number of shoppers at both the Saturday and Wednesday markets, particularly the Saturday market.  School starts, kids get busy with activities, and the number of events increases.  This is the first year the Decatur Markets have been open year-round so remember to stop by and shop.  You gotta eat, right?

The system relies on the vendors who make their living growing, producing and selling food and they need a year-round market for their products.  The Decatur Market offers those opportunities.  They believe in the importance of a strong local food system.

Duane, Greg & Nicole would love to hear from you and see you at the market.  Send an email to decaturfarmersmarket-subscribe@yahoogroups.com to receive their weekly updates and find out what’s new.

Flux Projects is returning to Decatur – this time in the form of Momentary Performances, a series of 8 different choreographed performances that take place in 8 different locations.  Over the month of October, each performance will occur 4 times.

Decatur is one of the 8 locations and the first performance occured last Tuesday from 4:15-4:30 on the MARTA Plaza.  These vinyl letters placed on the base of one of the lights describe the Momentary Performance and if anyone saw a woman with a gallon of milk sitting quietly listening to Abba while a car was honking in the background, you experienced the performance.

According to Flux Projects Executive Director Anne Dennington, Momentary Performances stems from artist Lee Walton’s interest in the subtle, everyday actions of public life.  Through the simple use of vinyl text installed in public space, everyday actions are formalized, thus taking on a new life.  Everyday occurrences become celebrated events and blur the line between real-life and theater.

Come on out for the next three Tuesdays and experience the “action” – you will find the woman perched on the edge of this light.
