Let the voting begin!

Thanks to Southern Living Magazine who selected Decatur as one of the Top 10 “Tastiest Towns in the South.”  They are letting readers choose the winning town and are urging residents and businesses to rally around their hometowns and vote for their favorite from now through Jan. 31 at southernliving.com/tasty.

The Decatur community is known for being vocal and expressing their opinions and this gives us a chance to show our support of our outstanding restaurants!  Decatur will be profiled along with the other nine cities in the April issue of Southern Living where they will announce the winner.

We are up against the likes of Charleston and New Orleans, along with Baltimore, Birmingham, Charlottesville, Houston, Lafayette, Louisville, and Raleigh.  We are the only city in Georgia chosen for this honor and we are thrilled.

They cited Decatur as “an emerging mecca for foodies who relish DeKalb Farmers Market and destinations like Cakes & Ale, Feast, and the Iberian Pig.”  They also mention Farmburger, No. 246, and Brick Store Pub calling Decatur “proud but not pretentious.”

I just voted for the first time – it was simple and so far, New Orleans is ahead with 60 votes with Charleston one vote behind at 59.  Right now Decatur has 12 votes and is ranked #7.  But this is just the first day.  Let’s go Decatur!

Let your voice be heard.  You can vote once or once a day until Jan. 31.  Our potential new six word story has quite a ring to it – Decatur – Tastiest Town in the South.

Decatur honored 14 Hometown Heroes in 2011 for contributions made to the Decatur community.  Hometown Heroes are those volunteers who work, often behind the scenes, to make the City of Decatur a better place to live, work and play.  They are nominated by people in the community and are judged by professionals who work with volunteers on a regular basis and do not know the nominees.

Decatur started its Hometown Hero program in 1996 at the close of the Hometown to the World Festival held during the Olympics.  The 14-day festival was a success because of the hundreds of volunteers who helped – we couldn’t have done it without them.

At the close of that festival in 1996, the City Commission honored the volunteers and created the Hometown Hero awards.  With this year’s presentations, Decatur has designated 245 Hometown Heroes.

If you want to see all of them, visit Decatur City Hall – we have their group photos and names framed on what we call our “Wall of Heroes” on the wall next to the 1st floor stairs going down to the City Commission Meeting Room.

Congratulations to this year’s Hometown Heroes:  Alan Ashe, Marc Brennan, Roger Bryant, Jodi Dick, Daniel Flores, Walter Kellar, Lori Leland Kirk, Louis & Sandra Rice, Susan Riley, Mark Sanders, Melissa Stratton, Seegar Swanson and Kyle Williams.  Click here to read more about them and their contributions to our community.

Decorate Decatur night comes but once a year. That’s when Decatur residents and businesses plug in the string lights, set up the cut-outs, carefully unwrap the giant figurines and show their holiday spirit. As soon as the sun goes down a dedicated group of judges, anonymous by tradition, load up in a trusty vehicle to cruise the streets of Decatur and seek out the best in holiday decor. Here are their findings for your holiday viewing pleasure.

Commissioners Cup Winner: 332 Lockwood Terrace

On the east side of Decatur, what to the wondering eyes of the anonymous judges appeared but this explosion of lights. They cover the roof of this home, outline the windows and doorways, extend to the shrubs and ornamental trees, and go all the way up the trunk of a tall pine tree smack dab in the middle of the yard. There are few things our judges like more than an over-the-top interpretation of what holiday décor should be, and they hope that the awarding of the Commissioners Cup encourages more of this decorating behavior.

Nathan-the star of PZI

The Permit, Zoning, and Inspections department is losing the very talented Nathan Soldat to the Atlanta Regional Commission where he will be serving as a transportation planner.  For those homeowners and contractors who have had the pleasure of working with Nathan, we are a holding a farewell open house on Wednesday, December 21st from 4-5:30.  Nathan has provided exemplary customer service during his time in Decatur and we will all miss him terribly.
