Decatur is full of artists, art and creative performances.  This weekend you can see new work by sculptor Julia Trawick Knight and painter Kathy Meliopoulos at The Seen Gallery.  The show opens Saturday, August 11 with a reception from 7 – 10 p.m.

Julia’s work graces the Hall of Presidents at the Booth Museum of Western Art in Cartersville and at Georgia Highlands College.  Kathy’s goal with each piece is to create a dynamic 2-dimensional surface which “reflects an attention to anatomy, expresses emotional content, and a reverence for color, texture and light.”

If you prefer performance art, check out the vocal stylings of Ja’ Naan “Imprompt” on Sundays at Cozee Teas, a new tea shop located at 225 E. Ponce de Leon (under the Town Square condos).  Sip back, relax and enjoy these performances at either 6 p.m. or 8 p.m.  Call now for reservations 404-373-2110.  Tickets are $8 with reservations and $9 at the door.

Ja’ Naan performed to a standing room only crowd at the Decatur Library Auditorium and received a rousing standing ovation.  Ja’ Naan was acknowledged earlier this year as The Ambassador to Sierra Leon, West Africa, Artist in Residence.  Her goal is to bridge culture by artistic interaction between international and local performers.  Her initiative uses various art forms to bring awareness to the need, provide resources and monetary assistance to health and wellness.

Art matters in Decatur so enjoy the show(s)!

And today Decatur’s brightest rock star is Natasha Trethewey – named 2012-13 U.S. Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry by the Library of Congress.  Natasha is not new to rock star status as she received a Pulitzer in 2007 for her work “Native Guard.”

Decatur is thrilled to celebrate this achievement with a toast in the Community Bandstand from 5 – 6:30 p.m. today.  Come join the community fun that is co-sponsored by the Decatur Downtown Development Authority and the AJC Decatur Book Festival and features refreshments provided by Eddie’s Attic.

Decatur is full of rock star writers and we congratulate Natasha on her newest awesome achievement.

The Decatur Arts Festival weekend always starts off with the ArtWalk on Friday evening. It’s the perfect way to explore Decatur’s shops and restaurants and will get you in an arts fest mood for the rest of the weekend. This year there are 20 participating businesses. Below is a few highlights about tonight that I’ve received in my inbox this past week:

  • Heliotrope is hosting an ArtWalk event and Fab Friday all in one night. The shop will be hosting John Ishmael, a local artist who creates abstract collage canvases. Enjoy complementary wine, hors d’oeuvres and 20 percent off all items in the store.
  • Trinity Mercantile and Design Co. will feature artwork by Ruth Franklin and offer complementary bubbly and nibbles.
  • CORE Performance Company and students from the Art Institute of Atlanta-Decatur will be participating in a live drawing event at CORE Studios on the Square. The dancers will move in the space, acting as models for the artist who will sketch them. If you are an artist and would like to sketch, you are welcome to bring your sketchbook. Light refreshments and some art materials will be provided.
  • Mingei World Arts will be hosting Peruvian gourd artist Arturo Salome Hauli and his brother. They’ll be showing, selling and demonstrating their beautiful work in the shop. Drop by for refreshments and a visit.

Decatur High School graduate Peter J. McDonald delivered the Student Commencement Speech at the Spring Commencement Ceremony at UGA – to a crowd of 50,000 graduating seniors.  Peter graduated summa cum laude from the UGA Honors Program and as you can hear (& see) on the video, he presented an eloquent, inspiring talk using his work as a City of Decatur summer camp counselor as a shining example of the difference that can be made for at-risk youth.

It makes me proud to be a Decatur High graduate (albeit many years before Peter) and especially proud of the heart and soul of the people that make up our community.  Great job Peter and thanks for the shout-out!

The video is well worth listening to the entire eight minutes – I promise.

Join the Black Sheep Ensemble and decorate your bike, wagon, stroller or yourself!  The 2011 parade had a great turnout, and we think we can top it this year.  Agnes Scott students will be walking with a 4ft tall Scottie dog made of chicken wire and filled with recycling, and we hope to see Team Chicken again (pictured above).

The celebration kicks off at 1pm when the parade reaches the garden.  We have an exciting array of events planned for children, youth and adults including:

  • Kids Crafts
  • Music
  • A Live Raptor Show! (need we say more!)
  • Special Earth Day T-shirt contest
  • Checkin’ out the resident Chicks and Bees in the Garden
