The City Commission has awarded the contract for construction of Phase V of the Downtown Decatur Streetscape Improvements to the low bidder, GS Construction of Lawrenceville. Construction is expected to start in February.
The project will provide new streetscape improvements in the following areas:
East Trinity Place:
- South side only between North McDonough Street and Church Street.
- Both sides between Church Street and Decatur Fire Station No. 1.
Church Street:
- Both sides between East Howard Avenue and East Trinity Place.
The work includes new sidewalks, street trees, lighting and street furniture. When the project is near completion, both streets will be milled and resurfaced.
Depending on the weather, the project will take 9 – 12 months. While there will be some inconvenience throughout construction, access to businesses is to be maintained throughout the project, except for short periods when a sidewalk or driveway is being removed or replaced. The city will have an on-site project manager to answer questions, help with construction issues and provide information about the project.
We appreciate everyone’s patience in finally getting this project started and look forward to a productive 2015.

Drivers cannot exit Northern Ave. onto W Ponce and should use an alternate route such as Montgomery to Fairview. Please avoid this intersection until further notice.

Update on bike/pedestrian crossing around Trinity Triangle
Posted in Transportation, tagged cyclist, Decatur, Design Environment and Construction, pedestrian, Public Works, Trinity Triangle on December 18, 2014 | Leave a Comment »
As many are aware, bike and pedestrian access along the PATH trail along E. Howard has been rerouted for the last couple of months due to construction at the Trinity Triangle site. At this time, the City of Decatur is pleased to announce that bike and pedestrian access will be restored to this corridor with a new crossing on E. Trinity Place.
Here’s how it works: The new crossing is located between the construction site (west) and the triangle where N. Candler Street meets E. Howard (east). Look for the pedestrian crossing beacon and the street paint. Cyclists and pedestrians traveling east on the PATH Trail or north across E. College Avenue may now cross E. Trinity Place at a new temporary crossing. Cyclists and pedestrians traveling west across E. Trinity Place may now safely make their way across E. College Avenue or west on the PATH Trail.
Be careful! The crossing is well marked, but since it is a new location a bit closer to the railroad crossing, all cyclists, pedestrians and motorists should exercise caution.
The Decatur Police Department and Public Works Department will monitor use of the crossing. Updates will be provided as the project continues. This bike and pedestrian access is considered temporary because use of the new sidewalk is subject to construction phasing at the Trinity Triangle site through 2015.
