storm waterRain and cold weather got last week off to a slow start, but one manhole was set and some pipe was laid.

The following construction activities are planned for next week:

  • Continue to set manholes, junction boxes, catch basins and drainage pipe under sidewalk area and into North McDonough Street.

Traffic control measures will remain in place on North McDonough Street, so expect traffic delays.

storm waterTwo days of rain this week prevented the contractor from making as much progress as anticipated. More rain is forecast for Monday, so expect a slow start for next week as well.

The following construction activities are planned for next week:

-Set manholes, junction boxes and catch basins and drainage pipe under sidewalk area and across one lane of North McDonough Street.

Traffic control measures will remain in place on North McDonough Street. Expect traffic delays.

storm waterThree days of rain and President Obama’s exciting visit to Decatur prevented the project contractor from making much progress on North McDonough Street in front of Decatur High School this week.  The contractor is aware that school back in session next week and is providing additional site protection while the sidewalk is restored.  Students will be able to walk on the Decatur High School side of the sidewalk during this period. Both marked crosswalks will be open as well.

The following construction activities are planned for next week:

-Set manholes, junction boxes and catch basins under sidewalk area.
-Backfill and replace sidewalk.
-Begin crossing North McDonough with one of the new storm drainage lines.

Traffic control measures will remain in place on North McDonough Street, so expect traffic delays.

Church Street mapAs part of ongoing efforts to eliminate flooding in downtown Decatur, storm drainage improvements will begin shortly on North McDonough Street, East Maple Street, Church Street and East Trinity Place. The project includes the replacement of undersized and deteriorated storm drain facilities in these streets. Work is expected to start at Decatur High School on February 9 and to last about nine months.

The City of Decatur and the state is repaving the following residential streets beginning July 30:

• Avery Street from East College Avenue to Winnona Drive, south end.
• Fayetteville Road from East Lake Drive to Gordon Street.
• Oakview Road from South McDonough Street to West Benson Street.
• Winnona Drive, south end, from Avery Street to 151 Winnona Drive.
• Pinetree Drive from West Ponce de Leon Avenue running west 130 feet.

City construction activities are scheduled between July 30 and August 29. State resurfacing work will follow and notices will be provided separately when that work takes place.

Shepco Paving, Inc., the City’s contractor, is performing the required work and will post signs on each street three days before construction begins.

All vehicles must be removed from the street during daylight hours when work is performed. Vehicles parked on the street during the posted times are subject to towing. Please watch for postings on your street.

South McDounough Street between Griffin Circle and Lenore Street (map) will be closed to through traffic overnight and during the day on Saturday. The street has been closed everyday this week for stormwater repairs and reopened every evening at 6 p.m. However, due to the wet weather, the cement has not set, which means the road cannot be reopened this evening. The street should be reopened tomorrow evening.

South McDonough Street will be closed between Griffin Circle and Lenore Street beginning Jan. 17 from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. The work will take no longer than 21 consecutive days and homeowners will be able to access their driveways during construction. The road will be reopened every night and early morning between 6 p.m. and 7 a.m.

At Clairemont, Church Street and Commerce Intersections and Church Street Bicycle Lanes

A community workshop to discuss alternative plans for pedestrian safety improvements at Clairemont, Church Street and Commerce intersections and Church Street bicycle lanes will be held on Thursday, January 12, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 p.m. in the City Commission meeting room of Decatur City Hall, 509 North McDonough Street, in downtown Decatur.  As part of the City’s capital improvements program, the purpose of the work is to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians, bicyclists and others using these facilities.

The City has retained the firm of Development Planning and Engineering to help plan the project, which will be partially funded through grants from the Georgia Department of Transportation.  An initial workshop to outline project goals was held in September.

The project is based on Decatur’s 2008 Community Transportation Plan and is a project in the 2010 Strategic Plan. A major goal of the Community Transportation Plan is to encourage healthy lifestyles and active living in Decatur.

 As part of its capital improvements program, the City of Decatur is considering options for pedestrian safety improvements to the Clairemont Avenue-Commerce Drive and Church Street-Commerce Drive intersections and for

bicycle lane improvements on Church Street in downtown Decatur. The purpose of the work is to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians, bicyclists and others using these facilities. The project is based on Decatur’s 2008

Community Transportation Plan and is a project in the 2010 Strategic Plan. A major goal of the Community Transportation Plan is to encourage healthy lifestyles and active living in Decatur. The plan is available online
