storm water

Work bogged down last week as the contractor dealt with a conflict between a large underground telephone cable and the new water line as well as the need to shore up the sidewalk area next to the LexTechs shop at North McDonough and East Maple. AT&T will replace the telephone cable.  The shoring required drilling holes in the street and lowering I-beams 30 feet into the ground.  Steel plates or wood lagging will be installed next week between the I-beams.

Once the shoring is in place, installation of the new  54” storm line will continue.  As soon as the work clears the intersection, 4 lanes of North McDonough Street will be repaved.

Traffic control measures will remain in place on North McDonough Street, so expect traffic delays.

Both structures (i.e., manholes) on the east side of North McDonough Street have been set and the first “stick” of 54” pipe has been installed in the south line on East Maple Street. This area is a jumble of underground utilities – water and lines, gas lines, power, telecommunication facilities including phone and fiber optic lines.  Several private storm drainage lines have been encountered as well.  These will be connected to the new system.

This week, the contractor will continue efforts  to clear North McDonough and begin the repaving process.

Traffic control measures will remain in place on North McDonough Street, so expect traffic delays.

The proposed location of the new 48” north storm line has slowed construction somewhat due to utility conflicts  and the line’s proximity to existing construction.  A leaking water line in Church Street created a cavity and a sinkhole last week as well.  This was repaired by DeKalb County.  Once these issues are resolved, the contractor will continue laying new storm pipe and setting a new manhole for the  north storm line.

The photo below shows a type of storm drainage facility that you don’t see too often – a hand-built, double-wall brick culvert.  This is an indication of the age of the system being replaced.

Traffic control measures will remain in place on North McDonough Street, so expect traffic delays.

The contractor has set a new manhole for the 54” south storm line at North McDonough and East Maple and is at work laying new storm pipe and a new manhole for the 48” north storm line.  After these manholes are set, new drainage inlets will be built on both corners at this location. Once completed, the sidewalks will be repaired and North McDonough Street will be repaved and opened for traffic.  Weather permitting, this should be completed in the next 7-10 days.

Traffic control measures will remain in place on North McDonough Street, so expect traffic delays.

Repairs to the old water line at North McDonough and East Maple were completed last week.  The repair is shown in the photograph below.  This line will be replaced as part of the storm drainage improvements.

This week, the contractor will start “potholing” East Maple Street to locate other underground utilities.

East Maple Street will be closed to  traffic until the work progresses past Church Street. Traffic control measures will remain in place on North McDonough Street, so expect traffic delays.

The contractor expects to open the west side of North McDonough Street to two-way traffic on Thursday.  When this happens the intersection of Maple and North McDonough will be closed.  East Maple Street will then be open for local two-way traffic only and no on-street parking will be available.  As the contractor moves up East Maple, we will eventually have to close the street to all vehicle traffic until the contractor gets past Church Street.

We are arranging temporary permit parking for residents and tenants who will lose access to their parking spaces.  This should be ready in a couple of weeks.  Until that time, if necessary, please feel free to park in the on-street spaces on Church Street or in the East Trinity surface parking lot (across from Decatur Fire Station No. 1) on a first come, first serve basis.

The City of Decatur is starting a free six month shuttle pilot program on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to bring Oakhurst neighborhood residents age 60 and older to downtown Decatur thanks to a mini-grant from the Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Aging Services. The shuttle will have a trial run on March 6 and will officially begin March 13 in partnership with DeKalb County Human Development Department Office of Senior Affairs.

Several shuttle stops in Oakhurst will allow residents to come to the downtown Decatur commercial district to take advantage of services, such as grocery stores, pharmacies, medical and dental offices, public library, and government offices. It will provide access to entertainment and cultural opportunities at the Decatur Recreation Center, as well as on the square.

We are not able to stop at individual homes but have planned three stops in areas where there are large concentrations of residents aged 60 and over:

  • Oakhurst Park parking lot (Feld Ave and Leyden St. entrance)
  • Family Dollar parking lot
  • Brower St. at McClean St.

Downtown Decatur stops will be at:

  • Decatur Recreation Center/Decatur Library
  • Kroger on Commerce Dr.
  • CVS at Commerce Dr. and Ponce
  • Decatur Post Office

In order to continue the shuttle and to possibly expand it, we need to be able to show there is a demand for it. So, we would love your help to encourage Oakhurst residents to ride it. Riders must be a City of Decatur resident at least 60 years old and must register to ride the van. Registration forms can be accessed here.
