Bean Work Play Cafe is a co-space for parents and kids – where parents can work and kids can play.  They are located at 134 New Street and are open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.  I receive their e-newsletters and the latest one intrigued me with its special Fall Classes for kids including children’s yoga, introduction to theater, sing-along with Ms. Carol, and Exploring Art.

Children’s Yoga with Ms. Sonata is open to kids from 3 – 6 years and teaches kids to practice basic yoga poses and learn how to gain strength in using these poses in patterns and routines.  Cost is $90 for a 6 week session.

Introduction to Theatre with Shelby Hofer is an introduction to scripted text, live performance, collaborative storytelling, character development and the basics of acting.  Participants work with PushPush Theater and Film Co-founder Shelby Hofer through a series of games that are physical, loud and high-energy.  Cost is $96 for a 6 week session with a maximum class size of 6 children.

Sing-Along with Ms. Carol includes singing and musical instruments including guitar, egg shakers and more.  Song themes include the winter holidays of many cultures such as Diwali, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and more.

And, finally, Exploring Art with Ms. Kingsbury for ages 4-7 will let children explore a variety of art processes and materials to encourage and explore the visual arts.  They say children will have fun, get messy, and gain confidence in their creative choices.

Bean Work Place Cafe is an exciting new concept and well worth taking the time to visit the space.  I understand they rent out their room(s) for birthday parties also.  Even if you don’t sign up for the classes, you should stop by and just see the place.

Let the voting begin!

Thanks to Southern Living Magazine who selected Decatur as one of the Top 10 “Tastiest Towns in the South.”  They are letting readers choose the winning town and are urging residents and businesses to rally around their hometowns and vote for their favorite from now through Jan. 31 at southernliving.com/tasty.

The Decatur community is known for being vocal and expressing their opinions and this gives us a chance to show our support of our outstanding restaurants!  Decatur will be profiled along with the other nine cities in the April issue of Southern Living where they will announce the winner.

We are up against the likes of Charleston and New Orleans, along with Baltimore, Birmingham, Charlottesville, Houston, Lafayette, Louisville, and Raleigh.  We are the only city in Georgia chosen for this honor and we are thrilled.

They cited Decatur as “an emerging mecca for foodies who relish DeKalb Farmers Market and destinations like Cakes & Ale, Feast, and the Iberian Pig.”  They also mention Farmburger, No. 246, and Brick Store Pub calling Decatur “proud but not pretentious.”

I just voted for the first time – it was simple and so far, New Orleans is ahead with 60 votes with Charleston one vote behind at 59.  Right now Decatur has 12 votes and is ranked #7.  But this is just the first day.  Let’s go Decatur!

Let your voice be heard.  You can vote once or once a day until Jan. 31.  Our potential new six word story has quite a ring to it – Decatur – Tastiest Town in the South.

The best government websites in the country were recognized at the 17th annual Communicator Awards recently.  The City of Decatur was one of the 13 award-winning government internet sites and received the highest honor, the Award of Excellence.

The winning sites were honored because of their creative graphic designs, easy-to-find information, and many included interactive components and eGovernment applications (including Decatur).  The top government content management systems enable staff to easily maintain the sites so residents easily find the information and government services.

With over 6,000 entries and six different categories, the Communicator Awards is one of the largest awards of its kind.   The Communicator Awards is sanctioned and judged by the International Academy of the Visual Arts, an invitation-only body consisting of top-tier professionals from a “Who’s Who” of acclaimed media, communications, advertising, creative and marketing firms.

We are honored to be chosen for this award and give a shout out to Decatur-based Lampe-Farley Communications for the graphic design and to Vision Internet for the re-developed site.

A big thanks to the Decatur community for your input, feedback, suggestions, and ideas during the re-design and your continued input now that helps keep the site fresh, up-to-date, and relatively error-free thanks to your eagle eyes!

For those of you who have walked across the square in the past two days, you may have noticed a new addition. The King of Pops is selling its delicious frozen pops as part of a food cart pilot project that we’ve been toying with. Some of you might remember an ice cream cart that was on the MARTA Plaza for a summer a few years ago. Although that concept didn’t take off, we were approached by two popsicle companies recently and decided to give it another go (the second pop company is coming soon).

Update: Just noticed Dateline: Decatur has a short video of customers trying out King of Pops on the square today. Check it out here.
