There seems to be a misperception that shopping in Decatur is expensive and only for the young and trendy.  My husband is hardly the type of guy to get his clothes from a boutique.  He dropped out of the corporate scene years ago because he didn’t want to spend his days in a coat and tie.  Give him a pair of Royal Robbins shorts, a Columbia shirt and a pair of Merrells and he’s covered (literally) seven days a week, twelve months a year.  Everything he needs can be found at Whit’s End in Decatur.  Ok, when it gets really cold, he’ll add socks and a Columbia fleece but Whit’s End has this covered too.   Yes, we can go to REI or Bass Pro to clothe him but Jeff and Greg will order anything that we need.  And, trust me their prices are very competitive.

My 20 something daughters are picky shoppers but can always find the perfect dress at Boogaloo or Kaleidiscope.  Sure, they have some pricey ones but there are plenty that cost less than the offerings at the mall.  We can support Decatur and know that 10 other young women won’t be wearing the same dress.  In fact, when my daughter was looking for a small purse for prom a few years back, we decided to try Decatur and found several good options at Mingei World Arts and at Boutique Karma.  The one we ended up buying was probably half what we would have paid at the mall.

As for me, Squash Blossom and Boutique Karma are the best for the kind of casual wear I prefer.  I like the fact that they’ll pull together entire outfits.  Ask local real estate agent Emilie Markert, who as my mom would say always looks very “put together,” where she got her outfit and I’ll bet it came from Boutique Karma.  So I encourage you to take the time to try shopping in Decatur.  Don’t assume that prices are high because a shop is small.  Take a day to discover the great retail options in Decatur, enjoy the friendly service while you save gas and support our local economy.

Valet parking has arrived in downtown Decatur. Shane at Saba has organized a valet service to operate out of N. McDonough Street by the bandstand on the square. The cost of valet parking is $5. Right now the service is available Friday and Saturday evenings from 5-11 p.m., but the company plans to expand to week nights in the upcoming months.

We usually consider May the big arts month in Decatur with the Decatur Arts Festival and events, gallery openings and outdoor concerts, but October is turning out to be a pretty artsy month this year. Just check out all the great activities going on around town this weekend:

Chuck Jones by Greg Preston at the Art Institute of Atlanta-Decatur.

·         Friday  ∙ 6-10 p.m. Last Call at Vinson Gallery. See the final show at Vinson Gallery before it closes up its bricks and mortar space on the square. I’m so sad to see the gallery move out, but am comforted by the fact that the owners will continue to work and sell art in Decatur.

·         Friday  ∙ 5-9 p.m. The Artist Within at the Art Institute of Atlanta-Decatur. The Gallery at the Art Institute (located on the ground floor of the glass building on West Court Square) invites everyone to the opening reception featuring photographs of famous cartoonists by Greg Preston.

·         Saturday ∙ 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Oakhurst Arts & Music Festival (see the previous post by Cheryl).

·         There are a number of Decatur businesses taking part in the month-long Atlanta Celebrates Photography festival. Visit Dalton Gallery at Agnes Scott, the Decatur Library, Junor Gallery, Mocha Match, The Seen Gallery and Worthmore Jewelers to see their photography exhibits (and get a cup of coffee, check out a book, buy some art or some jewelry if you wish).

The best part about all these events is that they’re free. So regardless of what the Dow does in the next few days you can still have some fun this weekend.

Mingei Madness!

After a nice lunch on the Square, I decided to stop by Mingei World Arts before heading back to the office. I’m so glad I did! Anne and Ellen, co-owners of Mingei, have just returned from a shopping trip in Mexico and they were in the process of unpacking their new finds when I walked in. It was so much fun to see the new reading folk art figures, animal bobble heads (the penguins are too cute), glittered figurines made out of recycled packaging and soda cans, and Day of the Dead skeletons.

A lot is going on at Mingei during the month of October starting with a visit from a silver jeweler from Oaxaca on Oct. 4 & 5 and ending with a 5 year birthday celebration on Nov. 1. Also, mark your calendars for the Oct. 26 Church Street Fall Festival. Participating shops include Mingei, Taste, Hoopla and Java Monkey.

If you like all the handmade treasures at Mingei, make sure to check out Pambili African Artworks in The Artisan building and Gifts on a Mission, a vendor in the McDonough Street Market. Both shops carry handcrafted items from Africa.

Now if only I could get one of these shop owners to take me on a shopping trip with them… 😉
