Corner Pub BagsCatherine Lee and I went over to the Corner Pub for dinner on Tuesday night, and were pleasantly surprised to find that they are re-using plastic bags for take-out orders.  We both got bags from the DeKalb Farmers Market, while the gentlemen sitting next to us got a Target bag.

Going green doesn’t have to be difficult, even for restaurants.  It can start with little steps as simple as re-using old grocery bags.

greenesDid you know that Greene’s Fine Foods is owned by the Greene family? I bet this whole time you thought the owners named their Decatur candy/gift shop after their favorite color. . . and then added an “e” at the end. . . hmmm, maybe not.

Anyways, today is the eldest Greene brother’s birthday and the family is celebrating by offering 40% off all in-store purchases today! That means you can stock up on fudge, chocolate covered pretzels and delicious gummy candies when you stop by the store between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. today to wish Phil Greene a happy birthday.

40% off candy? Now that’s what I call a sweet deal. Get it? Sweet.

Leons-33-01Heather from Leon’s Full Service writes in that Leon’s is now open for lunch every day at 11:30 am except for Mondays.  I am looking forward to having a great lunch, but the problem is deciding what I want to eat. There are so many great selections.

There is quite a selection of sandwiches, which all come with a side. I am leaning toward trying the grass-fed burger or maybe the shrimp gyro; or should I try the grilled vegetable sandwich? Then there are the salads, and the main entrees……

Hope to see you at Leon’s for lunch!

If many of you are like me and are sad to see the Decatur Arts Festival come and go so quickly (anyone else going through Pete the Cat withdrawal?), don’t worry! Mingei has us covered for next weekend. The store is hosting a trunk show with handmade jewelry by the Herndon Heald collective.

HerndonHeald

Herndon Heald creations are completely handcrafted – everything from the clasps to the jump rings are handmade. They’ve been featured in Lucky Magazine and the Sundance Catalog.

This Saturday will be the collective’s first trunk show in the southeast. So stop by Mingei World Arts on Saturday, May 30 from noon to 5 p.m. for a glass of wine, try on some Herndon Heald artwork and keep the spirit of the Decatur Arts Festival alive. Summer has official begun!

Destination Unknown by Kimberly Dean

The Seen Gallery is proud to present “Figuratively Speaking,” the newest works of renowned mixed-media artist Kimberly Dean, on display from Saturday, May 16 through Wednesday, June 24, 2009. Co-owners of The Seen Gallery, Bill Bibb and Amy Bradford, will host an opening night reception for the exhibit on Saturday, May 16 from 7 to 10 p.m., featuring complimentary cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. This event is open to the public and is the perfect opportunity to meet the artist and experience The Seen Gallery at its new location in Downtown Decatur.

“Kimberly Dean’s work is cerebral yet funny at times, poignant and with layers of creativity,” says The Seen Gallery co-owner Amy Bradford.  “Her mixed-media pieces incorporate hand-built clay with recycled materials and found objects.”

“I attempt to create honest and inquisitive visual speed bumps – pieces that pose questions but don’t quite answer them, says Dean. “By combining my sculpted clay figures with surviving parts of discarded and forgotten objects like tools, boxes, architectural elements, I attempt to express those universal human qualities that reveal our own vulnerability and emotions.” Dean’s work has become highly collectible and in addition to The Seen Gallery, she is represented in Birmingham (AL), Charlotte (NC), and Savannah (GA).
