Local Retail Updates

  • Best Time, a coffee, snack and accessories shop, is now officially open on the square at the corner of N. McDonough and Sycamore St. I saw some great purses for sale (for those of you who are into that sort of thing). The food selection includes coffee, hot dogs, pre-packaged baked goods and sandwiches.
  • Signature Revolutions has been open for a little more than a week at 335 W. Ponce de Leon Ave. The clothing store has a small selection of jeans and cute tops. The owners said a website is in the works.
  • Whits End is sadly closing its doors after three years of selling classic, comfortable menswear. All inventory and fixtures are 40-75 percent off, store credits and gift certificates are good until closing and any holiday gift exchanges can be done until Jan. 10. We’ll miss you, Jeff and Greg!

The Decatur Business Association held its annual Holiday Party in December.  In addition to honoring Decatur’s Hometown Heroes, they celebrated a successful 2009 by honoring outgoing officers and electing new officers for 2010.

The Decatur Business Association contributes to our community in many ways including producing several successful events and festivals such as Concerts on the Square, Blue Sky Concerts, Beach Party, Bonfire/Marshmallow Roast, Breakfast With Santa, and the Easter Egg Hunt.

The organization consists of volunteers, including their officers and committee chairs.  A big shout out goes to outgoing treasurer Laura Bevins, who served the organization as a volunteer for 10 years.  She is pictured with her very own street sign as a special parting gift.

2009 President Ann Berg also received a special sign for her contribution as president and president elect of the organization.  She is pictured with incoming president Scott Drake.

It is membership time for DBA so take a minute to check out the Decatur Business Association website for information about all they do to make our community a better place.

Then head over to Greene’s  for National Chocolate Covered Anything Day! Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like. Greene’s invites everyone to bring in one item smaller than an apple and they will chocolate cover it for you! The best idea I’ve heard so far is bringing in a piece of bacon – yum!

I think it’s safe to say that most people aren’t fans of Black Friday – the stress, waking up early, standing in long lines, fighting the crowds, etc. Well, thank goodness for Decatur’s shops. A number of local retailers are offering discounts this Friday (hello Fab Friday!), which means you can actually enjoy your holiday shopping walking along the city’s tree-lined streets, experiencing great customer service, and taking a shopping break at one of the local restaurants.

I’ll continue to add to this list throughout the day. Feel free to leave a comment if I’ve left anything off!

>Whit’s End will be open early on Friday with all leftover summer items just $15 or $9.  Other sales items include frames, golf tees, Docker’s slacks and Patagonia shoes. Columbia upper body wear is 20% off and all other non sale items are 10% off.

>Mingei World Arts has some great new items including hand-made woven products from Burma and Bhutan, more Decatur Banner Bags (tote bags made from vintage City of Decatur banners), recycled hand-made Coleccion Luna bags and Himalayan candles.

>Kaleidoscope Boutique will be open at 9 a.m. on Friday with 25% off all fall clothing. The boutique will be serving complimentary hot mulled wine and cookies while you shop.

>Boogaloos Boutique will open at 9 a.m. with 25% off all full-priced merchandise.
