For the past few years every time a bus tour comes through Decatur or a conference wants more information or when the DBA hosts the annual Agnes Scott orientation we would think to ourselves, “We need an official welcome video for Decatur.” Well (drum roll please) we finally have one! The video “premiere” took place last Tuesday evening at the Decatur Business Association holiday meeting.

We got some great feedback and would love to hear what you think:

A community workshop to discuss the railroad crossing improvements at Candler and McDonough Streets and the North McDonough streetscape improvements will be held on Thursday, September 9, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the City Commission meeting room of Decatur City Hall, 509 North McDonough Street, in downtown Decatur.

In addition to the railroad crossing improvements, funding recently has been obtained to design streetscape improvements to North McDonough Street between Howard Avenue and Trinity Place.  Both projects have similar goals — to improve safety and accessibility for pedestrians, bicyclists and others using these facilities. The streetscape improvements will join the railroad crossing improvements where North McDonough meets the CSX rail crossing.

We hope you will be able to join us to learn more about preliminary plans for the railroad crossing improvements and to help start the planning for the North McDonough streetscape improvements.

These projects are based on Decatur’s 2008 Community Transportation Plan. A major goal of the Community Transportation Plan is to encourage healthy lifestyles and active living in Decatur.

The City has retained URS Corporation of Atlanta, a planning and engineering design firm, to help plan both projects.  Sprinkle Consulting of Lutz, Florida, a nationally-recognized design firm that specializes in bicycle and pedestrian planning, is assisting URS  in the work. The projects will be funded through the City’s Capital Improvements Bond program and grants from the Georgia Department of Transportation, the Atlanta Regional Commission and MARTA.

The Waldorf School of Atlanta and Academe of the Oaks hosted more than 250 Waldorf teachers and administrators at the 2010 AWSNA Summer Conference on the campus of Agnes Scott College.  AWSNA, the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America, is the membership organization for more than 250 Waldorf schools in North America and this is the first time they have held the conference in the southeast.

Rhonda Wildman sent us some of the Decatur experiences shared by conference participants including:

FarmBurger was a big hit – especially the veggie burger and the fried okra.  People loved the food at Farmstead 303 – on the day they visited, they were thrilled to be greeted by former President Jimmy Carter.  One group frequented The Iberian Pig four times during their week-long stay in Decatur.  The sandwiches from Badda Bing and Nectar were very popular.  And finally, there were many sightings of Squash Blossom shopping bags during the duration of the conference.

The Waldorf School and Academe of the Oaks were proud to host this annual conference and proud to share all that Decatur has to offer.  One of the conference participants noted on the evaluation, “Decatur gets a 10 out of 10 for beauty, graciousness and fabulous hosting and hospitality.”

A couple of us are in Las Vegas for the Transforming Local Government conference. During the awards lunch today, the City of Decatur won an award for our Open City Hall program. (Apologies for the grainy photo – I only have my camera phone with me).

The City of Decatur was one of the pilot cities for Open City Hall, an online forum for civic engagement. If you’ve never used Open City Hall before and are a resident of Decatur, check it out on the city’s website here. We’re currently looking for feedback on the 2010/2011 proposed budget.

Decatur announced its newest 2009 Hometown Heroes at the Decatur Business Association Holiday Party at the Holiday Inn Decatur Conference Plaza.  Hometown Heroes are those folks that work, mostly behind the scenes, to make our community a better place to live and work.  And they work for free!

Decatur started its Hometown Hero program at the close of the 1996 Summer Games after our Hometown to the World Festival during the Olympics.  We put on a 10-day festival thanks to hundreds of volunteers who helped make it happen.

This year marks the 13th year of honoring volunteers and we now have 217 Hometown Heroes.  You can see the photos from each year at City Hall – they are on the wall that goes down the steps to the City Commission Meeting Room.

Pictured here with our City Commissioners are our newest Hometown Heroes – Bill & Vicki Ainslie, Michelle Bray, Bill Bryson, Greg & Nicole Coleson, Mary & Bill Flad, Gary Kronick, Dot Moye, Mercedes Pasqualetti, and Vernita Pinto.

Thanks for all you do for Decatur!
