Halloween is a week away!

How have we already come to the end of October?! Halloween is one week away, and to me, that means the holidays are upon us. But let’s not put the cart before the horse…go out and enjoy all of the Halloween festivities that Decatur has to offer and we can start talking about the holidays next week.

  • Leapin’ Lizzards’ 4th annual Halloween Bash Dance Party

    Want a fun and safe alternative to the normal trick or treating for your little ghouls?  Leapin’ Lizards is hosting its 4th Annual Halloween Dance Party with Avondale Estates’ very own Dean Donut!  On Saturday October 29th from 10am – 3pm the entire family can join us as Dean Donut hosts the fang-tastic dance party for the little ghouls, face painting, pizza, hot dogs, goodie bags, trick or treating in a safe environment, photo sessions on a “not so scary” set and lots inflatable fun.

  • Decatur’s 2nd annual Decorate Decatur Halloween Contest
  • Homegrown Halloween Parade & Monsters Ball
    Sunday, Oct. 30 from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. on and around the square in downtown Decatur.  The event is geared for all ages and is free to the community.  Put on your most ghoulish costume and come celebrate Halloween.  3 p.m. – the younger set can kick off the afternoon with a Halloween story time at Little Shop of Stories; 4 p.m. – local zombies and goblins, young and old, will meet at the Community Bandstand for a walking parade around downtown Decatur.  5 – 7 p.m. – enjoy the haunting sounds of The Dammages (www.thedammages.com) as they claim the bandstand for the Monsters’ Ball, an all-ages costumed dance and band party.  Bring a picnic dinner and enjoy live music, door prizes from local businesses and some tricks and treats to round out the festivities.  The event is sponsored by HomeGrown Decatur, an artists’ market at 412 Church St.  For more information visit www.homegrowndecatur.com or www.facebook.com/HomeGrownHalloween
  • Twain’s 3rd Annual Moonshiner’s Ball
    Saturday, October 29th. Doors open at 8pm, and it’s $5 to get in. They’ve got two great bands for the night: Megan Jean & the KFB, and Dirty Bourbon River Show! Costume contests, a Fortune Teller, and Photo Booth. Mark it on your calendars cause this can’t be missed! Click here for more info
  • Ebster’s House of Horror
    When:  Saturday, October 29th, 2011
    Time:   7:30-11:30pm
    Where:  Beacon Hill Center (430 W. Trinity Place)
    Cost: $2.00 per person Children Under 11 must be accompanied by an adult.
    Come Visit Zombie Land, Crystal Lake, The Mortuary and the Butcher Shop, IF YOU DARE!!
  • Halloween Dance hosted by Decatur Active Living
    Decatur Active Living would like to invite the 4/5 Academy at Fifth Avenue students and other fourth and fifth graders in the Decatur Community to it’s first Halloween Dance.  Come dressed in your Halloween Costume and join us for a evening for fun, food and music.
    When:          Saturday, October 29th
    Time:           6:30pm-8:30pm
    Location:      Ebster Gym (404 Electic Avenue)
    Cost:           $5.00; Chaperons are free
    All participants will receive a free 4×6 photo and a free ticket to the Haunted House at Beacon Hill 430 W. Trinity Place (Decatur Active Living Temporary Location).
    Parking is available in the Calloway lot at the corner of Commerce St. and Trinity Pl.

Beer Week Continues in Decatur

Everybody is getting in on the Atlanta Beer Week action here in Decatur ! Don’t believe me? Then head on over to Little Shop of Stories on Saturday for the 1st annual Root Beer Festival. The two Eddie & Agnes Civil War concerts that were scheduled for this evening and Monday have been canceled. In an email, Daren Wang writes that due to a case of laryngitis, the concert has been canceled and they’re looking into replacement dates in December. Please join us on Saturday in Harmony Park for the 14th annual Oakhurst Arts & Music Festival.  There will be tons of amazing artists, local music, a community parade, fun-filled kids area and more!

Also, the Decatur Police Department will be doing bicycle registration and the Decatur Fire Department will be doing Car Seat checks at the turn around in front of the Solarium on W. Hill St. from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

The forest is full of blooms and berries, and on Sunday, October 2nd  from 2-4pm, it will also be full of lively music from The Unusual Suspects, returning for a repeat engagement in the Pavilion.  George Eckard and friends will delight you with original and traditional folk music with guitars, mandolin, harmonica, banjo and vocals.

Returning once again,  Chef Billy Allin from the popular Decatur restaurant, Cakes & Ale, will fire up a wood burning grill to cook a delicious selection of small plates enjoyed with great wines & live music.

All proceeds benefit the Oakhurst Community Garden Project.  Rain or shine.  In case of rain, a back up location will be used.  No refund will be given in case of inclement weather.

Music will be provided by The Beans!

We have a perfect weekend in store…

Finally, The St. Thomas More Players will be presenting “Oliver!”, the musical version of Dickens’ Oliver Twist, on September 23-25 and September 30-October 2, 2011 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Decatur.
