Hey Decatur! The Publix Georgia Marathon is coming through Decatur on Sunday morning, March 18th and we need all the help we can get. There are several ways you can help…
1. Come out to the intersection of Ponce and Clairemont and join our cheering section. If the runners vote for Decatur as the best cheering section, the Decatur Youth Fund will win $1500!!! So wear green, make noise, and cheer on the runners.

2. Volunteer to help at the water stations. Its tons of fun to cheer and hand out water and orange slices to the runners as they go through our town. Email katie.abel@decaturga.com for more info (This is a great project for groups like scouts, youth groups, or book clubs!)

Happy Friday, Decatur!

If you are like me, you have been waiting on Friday to arrive for three or four days now. Finally, the day has arrived and this weekend is full of fun things to see and do in Decatur.

Tonight Eddie’s Attic is hosting SUGAR & THE HI LOWS with special guest, EMILY WEST. If shopping is more your thing, head to West Ponce for Fab Friday. Heliotrope is offering 20% off your purchase, hors d’oeuvres from Sawicki’s, and complimentary beverages.  Boogaloos is also offering 20% off all full price merchandise, wine and hors d’oeuvres.

Spend tomorrow afternoon at the Oakhurst Wine Crawl and then go over to Feast Resturant and celebrate the great run they had in Decatur. Be sure to tell Teri and Robin thanks for all of the good times and wish them well on future endeavors. In between wine drinking and Feast-ing, stop by Decatur CD for the in-store 3 Lb. Thrill performance at 3:30 p.m. After dinner you can walk up to Church Street for The Seen Gallery opening reception of Voyages, painting by Vickie Martin.

On Friday and Saturday, Decatur City Dance will be performing four shows of A Day With Mother Goose. After each show, cast members will visit with the audience, sign autographs and pose for pictures so bring your cameras!

Get ready to make some noise!

This year, you get to wear your silly green outfits 2 days in a row…once on St. Patty’s Day and again the next day for the Publix Georgia Marathon! The race will come through our city on Sunday, March 18, and Decatur invites you to participate as a hydration and/or cheering volunteer.
Volunteers are needed to staff two Hydration Stations, one at the East Lake MARTA station and one in downtown Decatur. Your duties will be to hand out water to the runners and to cheer them on. To volunteer for the Hydration Stations please contact Katie Abel at katie.abel@decaturga.com.

Cheering Station Volunteers
Volunteers are needed at the official cheering station on Ponce de Leon adjacent to the Old Courthouse Square and should arrive at 7:30 a.m. on March 18 to help cheer the runners on. The City of Decatur has won over $17,000 for having the best cheering section over the years so let’s keep it up! Don your GREEN clothes and come out with noise makers, signs, and/or musical instruments. Let’s make sure the runners never forget Decatur!

For more information on the marathon, contact Katie.abel@decaturga.com

Once again, the Publix Georgia marathon will be coming through the streets of Decatur on Sunday, March 18th. Each year, there are prizes given to the cities/neighborhoods that have the best cheering sections along the race route. Decatur has placed very highly each of the last four or five years and we are looking to continue our winning streak!
We need anyone with a garage band, a dance group, a kazoo, or a bunch of screaming cheerleaders to come out and help us cheer on the runners and show them why Decatur is a great place to come back and visit!
If you are interested in joining our cheering crew, please email us at events@decaturga.com

Be sure to put March 18th on your calendar to come on out and cheer on the runners- lets show them what Decatur is really all about!

Decatur honored 14 Hometown Heroes in 2011 for contributions made to the Decatur community.  Hometown Heroes are those volunteers who work, often behind the scenes, to make the City of Decatur a better place to live, work and play.  They are nominated by people in the community and are judged by professionals who work with volunteers on a regular basis and do not know the nominees.

Decatur started its Hometown Hero program in 1996 at the close of the Hometown to the World Festival held during the Olympics.  The 14-day festival was a success because of the hundreds of volunteers who helped – we couldn’t have done it without them.

At the close of that festival in 1996, the City Commission honored the volunteers and created the Hometown Hero awards.  With this year’s presentations, Decatur has designated 245 Hometown Heroes.

If you want to see all of them, visit Decatur City Hall – we have their group photos and names framed on what we call our “Wall of Heroes” on the wall next to the 1st floor stairs going down to the City Commission Meeting Room.

Congratulations to this year’s Hometown Heroes:  Alan Ashe, Marc Brennan, Roger Bryant, Jodi Dick, Daniel Flores, Walter Kellar, Lori Leland Kirk, Louis & Sandra Rice, Susan Riley, Mark Sanders, Melissa Stratton, Seegar Swanson and Kyle Williams.  Click here to read more about them and their contributions to our community.
