Over the past few years, the interest in living a more green and sustainable lifestyle has grown tremendously. The Wylde Center (formerly Oakhurst Community Garden Project), the City of Decatur, and the DeKalb County Public Library are pleased to announce their collaboration on offering you an exciting FREE series of classes in 2012. Topics include gardening for food and for the unpredictable environment, how to make your home more efficient, composting, and using what you have to lead a healthy life. Look for seminars and workshops that speak to information that is timely and current as well as leaving with a full list of resources that can be found at your local library and online.

Since its beginning, the Decatur Craft Beer Festival has raised hundred of thousands of dollars for Decatur non-profit groups. The deadline is quickly approaching, so if you are a part of a City of Decatur non-profit, please click here to download your copy of the grant application.

The Decatur Craft beer Festival will be held on Saturday, October 20th and tickets will go on sale at noon on Monday, September 17th.

July 4th Update

Due to extreme weather conditions (heat and possible thunder storms), please be advised that the City of Decatur will be monitoring the temperatures on Wednesday, July 4th and may decide, in the interest of public safety, to cancel some or all of the planned holiday events including the Pied Piper Parade, the Concert on the Community Bandstand, and the fireworks.

Updates will be made on this blog and we recommend that you check the site often for timely reports and possible schedule changes.

The Brick Store Pub is kicking off its week-long 15th anniversary celebration with a fundraiser for the DeKalb History Center. The event is from 2 to 4 p.m. this Sunday and will include the unveiling of the Menaboni mural at the pub that will be on loan from the history center, live music, appetizers and an exclusive tapping of a Dogfish brew.

Join Global Growers and Slow Food Atlanta for a unique tour of the city’s international farms and gardens celebrating global culinary traditions, specialty crops and distinctive agricultural traditions.

Travel to 8 metro destinations within a 5-mile radius, hosted by growers from 13 world cultures. Two of the sites are located within City of Decatur; Umurima (Burundi Women’s Farm) & Decatur’ s Kitchen Garden!

There are two tour options, both starting at the Clarkston Farmers Market & the Clarkston Community Garden:

  1. VIP Bus Tour –For $60 explore the farms and gardens from the comfort of a bus leaving from the Clarkston Community Center at 12:00pm. Seats are limited, so make haste if this is your preference!
  2. Self-Guided Tour–For $25 take your own time either from your car or on your bike (or even on foot, if you’re super ambitious). The bike tour will leave at 11:30 from the Clarkston Community Center. If you choose to drive yourself, feel free to tour anytime between 10:30am and 5:00pm.
All proceeds benefit the Global Grower’s Network and the host farms/gardens.

The weather forecast looks beautiful and Yacht Rock Schooner is gearing up to give us one heck of a show!

The Decatur Business Association puts on the Beach Party every year as our biggest (and only) fundraiser. Money raised tomorrow helps to fund all of our free events for the rest of the year including the Concerts on the Square, the Bonfire and Marshmallow Roast, the Easter Egg Hunt, and the 4th of July Fireworks.

Tickets are $7 in advance for adults, $10 at the gate. Kids 3-12 are $5 and that ticket includes all of the boardwalk games and fun. Click here to purchase your tickets.

Please remember that no outside food or drinks are allows inside the festival gates-also no coolers or pets, sorry!

Finally, our Decatur Fire Department will be collecting canned goods and other non-perishable items for our local food banks. The summer is a tought time for those organizations so please bring us supplies to help stock the shelves. Drop your items in the big red barrels at any of the entry gates tomorrow.

The Decatur Farmer’s Market is celebrating the 10th anniversary of it’s Wednesday market and the 2nd anniversary of the Saturday market.  The market is a gathering space that supports organic, local, and sustainable foods in Georgia. It provides the Decatur community with the opportunity to buy from and speak directly with the local farmers and food producers who offer goods produced by sustainable methods.
