Happy Hanukkah!

The Menorah Lighting on the Square is this Thursday, Dec. 10 at 6 p.m. There will be latkes, music, entertainment, a welcome from the rabbi and the mayor, dancing, and Mr. Dreidel photo ops.

A Super Terrific Thursday

Tonight is not just any Terrific Thursday, it’s a super duper jam-packed Terrific Thursday!

The annual tree lighting at Little Shop of Stories is at 7 p.m. There will be singing, snow, hot chocolate and, a visit from Santa for the official tree lighting countdown.

All around town shops will be open late offering specials and discounts for Terrific Thursdays. A new addition is the Coco + Mischa pop up shop – go check it out!

And don’t forget to swing by the Visitors Center for the opening exhibit of palate: food photography by Morgan Perkins.

Why go out on Black Friday when there’s a much better way to shop this week? Go to Small Business Saturday and Sunday in Decatur instead!

To honor the greatness that is Decatur’s local independent shops and restaurants, we’ll have a Small Business Saturday and Sunday tent this. . .Saturday and Sunday. . . on the square. Spend your weekend supporting your favorite local businesses and then stop by the tent for:

  • Free gift wrap (on any locally purchased items)
  • Hot chocolate, candy and other goodies
  • A chance to win a City of Decatur basket (with gifts from all over town)
  • A visit from Santa (Saturday only)
  • To turn in your receipts – spend $200 at local shops in Decatur during the month of November and get a $20 gift card to a local restaurant

It wasn’t easy to decide the winner of this year’s Commissioners’ Cauldron. There were 19 wonderfully creative entries. After much deliberation, the judges picked the mutant lawn flamingos at 204 Adair St:

While you are putting the final touches on your costumes, don’t forget to drop by Decatur Public Works with your old electronics.  The Autumn Electronics Recycling Day will be held this Saturday, October 31st from 9am-1pm.  Almost anything with an electrical cord can be recycled at the event for free, but there is a $10 charge for televisions.  You can also bring paper materials for secure shredding and styrofoam too!  Since we started these events in 2005, we’ve diverted more than 1 million pounds of electronics from landfills, and since we added paper shredding we’ve collected 50,000 pounds.
