Summer is right around with the corner and with it comes hot temperatures and extreme heat. Extreme heat events occur when temperatures are substantially higher than average for a particular location at a given time of year. The impacts of extreme heat can cause widespread suffering and fatalities – there were more than 7,400 heat-related deaths in the U.S. between 1999 and 2010. That’s why the Federal Government is working to help state and local communities prepare for potential extreme heat events this summer.

Fortunately, the majority of heat-related deaths and illnesses are preventable. If we take actions to prepare for and respond to extreme heat events, we can  dramatically reduce the risks associated with extreme heat—especially for the most vulnerable populations, including the elderly and very young, people with certain health conditions, people like public works employees or construction workers who work outside, and people in low-income households.  There are a number of resources that can help:

In the event of extreme heat this summer, stay tuned to this blog for information regarding the locations of cooling stations that could be opened around the City.

May 15-21 is National Emergency Medical Services Week, which means its time to thank our local fire fighters.

The City of Decatur Fire/Rescue is a Basic Life Support Service. It’s firefighters not only fight fire, they also perform other rescue operations. EMS calls are a significant part of their daily operations.

All Decatur firefighters are trained as first responders and there is at least one trained EMT on every truck. Many of the firefighters that have taken it upon themselves to become trained paramedics and new personnel are trained to the level of EMTA (advanced).

The City of Decatur Fire Department works hard to meet the necessary hours for training and education units. It strives to have updated continuing education courses and the firefighters work to serve Decatur with compassion and competency.

If you get a chance, thank your firefighters for also serving as Emergency Medical Technicians, too.
