November Focus

DecaturFocus

We’ve heard from a number of residents that the November issue of the Decatur Focus was delivered late this month. We apologize for the inconvenience and know many of the listed events have already passed. We’ve reached out to the post office to figure out the cause of the delay, but have not heard back. For those of you who haven’t received The Focus this month or are interested in reading the digital version every month, you can access it online here. We’ll update this blog post once we get to the bottom of this issue. Thank you for your patience.

Don’t Text and Drive

The City of Decatur Fire Department is working with Decatur High School to prevent texting while driving. There is a crushed vehicle on display in front of the high school that is a result of an actual texting while driving incident.

From Fire Captain Violante: In the past two months the fire department has responded to a large increase in the numbers of pedestrians hit by distracted drivers. We hope this crushed vehicle encourages people to be safer while driving. The display will be present until Saturday, November 21st.

Congratulations to the 23rd Citizen’s Police Academy graduates.  Citizen’s Police Academy participants attended Thursday evening classes for the past ten weeks learning about various topics such as recruitment & training, traffic enforcement, use of force, criminal investigations and firearms safety & familiarization.  Participants also completed a patrol ride-a-long and had opportunities to tour the DeKalb County Jail and Medical Examiner’s Office.

On behalf of Decatur Police Department staff, we would like to thank every participant, and the families who supported their time away from home, for their investment in learning about the police department, for getting to know and developing relationships with the officers and fellow classmates and for their support of the Decatur Community.

Holidays are approaching and so are unsafe driving practices. Keep loved ones safe this season by ensuring they are in the correct car seats, booster seats, or wearing their seat belt correctly. The fire department is happy to check car seat installations and advise residents on seat belt use (and misuse); however, most issues arise out of doing things “we aren’t suppose to do.” Do not let your small children sit in the front seat. Do not text and drive. Look out for pedestrians. And do not drink and drive. If there is any confustion about rules, ages, do(s), and don’t(s), look at this website for Georgia safety laws -http://www.ghsa.org/html/stateinfo/bystate/ga.html or come see us at the fire department.
