4thofJuly

The Fourth of July will be here before you know it. This year, gather the family and come out to Decatur’s 2016 Independence Day celebration. XFINITY is proud to be the presenting sponsor of this year’s event.

The evening kicks off at 6 p.m. with the Pied Piper Parade in downtown Decatur. Grab the family and watch the parade wind by, or decorate a bike, stroller, wagon, or scooter and join the fun yourself.

At 7 p.m., the Callanwolde Concert Band will perform at the Community Bandstand. Come enjoy the music and participate in family-friendly activities with XFINITY.

Once darkness falls, it’s time of the main event: the fireworks show! Ooh and aah at the spectacular fireworks launched from the top of the DeKalb County parking garage. It’s free fun for the whole family. We can’t wait to see you there!

Crossing E. Trinity Place is temporarily restricted near E. Howard Avenue due to sidewalk improvements at the 245 E. Trinity Place “Arlo” construction site.

As many of you know, access across E. Trinity Place from the PATH trail HAS been maintained for nearly all of the construction period at this location. However, access is NOT available right now.

This is temporary. The construction is expected to end by July 1st and access across E. Trinity Place will be restored.

Pedestrians and cyclists should use the Agnes Scott Tunnel and Church Street as alternatives to the E. Howard Ave/E. Trinity Place intersection.

Be safe as we get closer to the end of construction at this location.

Sheep

Trees Atlanta plans to return on June 18 with its herd of sheep to help control Japanese hops, kudzu and other invasive plants on the steep slope between Section 14 and the creek at the Decatur Cemetery.

Trees Atlanta led the recent woodland restoration effort in the stream corridor on the east side of the Cemetery.

The sheep in this program are protected by a human shepherd and livestock guardian dogs, and the sites are surrounded by solar powered, low-voltage electrified fencing to keep the sheep safe and on-task while they are working. The work is expected to take 7 to 10 days at the Cemetery.

Trees Atlanta has used sheep to help eradicate invasive plants at Decatur Cemetery, the Atlanta Beltline, Chastain Park, Kirkwood Forest, Morningside Nature Preserve, Candler Park, Herbert Green Nature Preserve, Perkerson Park and other green spaces in metro Atlanta. The sheep are provided by Ewe-niversally Green, a local firm that specializes in environmentally sound conservation techniques.

For more information about Trees Atlanta and Ewe-niversally Green, see www.treesatlanta.org and www.eweniversallygreen.com.
