The impact

As tentatively announced previously, effective the morning of Monday, June 19, CSX will begin rebuilding their crossings at Candler and McDonough Streets.

Site work will continue uninterrupted until its completion which is projected to take roughly seven days. Both intersections will be closed and will remain closed for the duration.

Completion could be delayed due to rain. Stay tuned here for updates if an extension proves necessary.

How to manage

The following graphics detail the closures, resulting traffic patterns, and alternative options for crossing the tracks.

The details

This collective project, including rail crossings at both McDonough and Candler, will significantly improve accessibility and safety for pedestrians and bicyclists, further encouraging those who live in Winnona Park, the McDonough-Adams-Kings Highway community, and other neighborhoods south of the CSX rail corridor to walk and bike into downtown Decatur. The improvements will provide gentler slopes on the north side of both crossings resulting in an accessible path for persons in wheelchairs or those using strollers, and a much safer route located outside the railroad crossing gates for pedestrians and bicyclists. Presently, pedestrians and bicyclists have to share the roadway with vehicles at these crossings.

In addition to improvements at the crossings, there will now be new pedestrian crosswalks where none presently exist — on the east side of both intersections and just north of the Candler crossing connecting to the sidewalk along the old Depot property.

Finally, improved vehicular mobility is also a project priority. Both crossings will include new traffic signals on both sides which will allow protected left turns on all legs of the two crossings.

Are you interested in learning more about the City’s FY17-18 budget? There are a few ways for you to get involved between now and adoption day on June 19, 2017.

  1. Take some time to read through the budget document. It’s available online at www.decaturga.com/budget. Or if you prefer to look at a hard copy, head over to the Decatur Library reference desk (215 Sycamore Street) or stop by the City Clerk’s Office (509 N. McDonough Street) to check one out.
  2. Attend a public hearing and let the City Commission know your thoughts on the budget and the 2017 millage rates. We have three public hearings scheduled in the coming weeks – Monday, June 12th at 6:00 p.m.; Monday, June 19th at 3:30 p.m.; Monday, June 19th at 7:30 p.m. All meetings will be held in the City Commission Meeting Room at Decatur City Hall (509 N. McDonough Street.)
  3. Let us know your thoughts via the Open City Hall forum. If attending a meeting at City Hall just doesn’t work for you, you can still let the City Commission know your thoughts by sharing them here.
  4. Watch the archived video of the City Commission work session focused on the FY16-17 revised budget and the FY17-18 proposed budget. An archived video of the session is now available on the City’s website.
