Don’t Block the Box Striping to be Installed Friday, April 6

The impact

“Don’t Block the Box” pavement striping will be installed on East Trinity Place at Decatur Fire Station No. 1 starting at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 6.

How to manage

Traffic will be open in both directions during the work but expect minor delays throughout the day. Commerce and N. McDonough remain alternate means of travel through and around the city.

*Please be reminded that motorist should not stop between the stop lines in front of the fire station.

Neighborhood Clean-Up: Saturday, April 7

Reminder: the City of Decatur is hosting Neighborhood Clean-up Days on Saturdays in March-June, to allow residents to dispose of bulky materials that would not normally be placed in pay-as-you-throw bags. Every street in the City has been assigned to one Saturday. Visit the Neighborhood Cleanup Days page on the city website for detailed instructions and specified dates for each street.

Collection for April 7 will take place in the following neighborhood:

Decatur Heights Neighborhood –
Barry Street
North Candler Street
Pate Street
East Maple Street
Village Walk
Sycamore Street
East Ponce de Leon Ave. (400 to 1100 Block)
Ponce de Leon Court
Hillyer Place
Sycamore Place
Oak Lane
Mountain View Street
Hillcrest Avenue
Springdale Street

All items to be collected should be placed at the curb by 7:30 a.m. This ensures that we do not have to rerun routes for late set-outs. Collections run until 3:30 p.m., or until finished, whichever is sooner.

2018 Decatur Design Award Nominations

Every year in May during National Preservation Month, the City of Decatur and the Decatur Preservation Commission recognize and honor projects or individuals that promote excellence in preservation, design, sustainability, and advocacy.

Nominations must be received by April 6. Design Awards Ceremony will be held May 9 at City Hall.

Downtown Sidewalk Hazards to be Repaired Beginning Monday, April 2

The impact

The City of Decatur is contracting with Georgia Safe Sidewalks to repair sidewalk trip hazards along West Ponce de Leon Avenue, East Ponce de Leon Avenue, and East Court Square. Weather permitting, work is anticipated to begin on Monday, April 2 and last approximately four days.

How to manage

Sidewalk access will remain open, except in the block of any sidewalk undergoing repair at any given time. On-street parking will not be affected, however be advised that residual dust may collect on vehicles parked adjacent to repair sites.

This round of repairs will include all trip hazards up to 2 inches in height; trip hazards greater than two inches and panels with cracking will require panel replacement to be completed at a later date.

West Ponce de Leon to be Closed for Spring Movie Night

The impact

West Ponce de Leon Avenue in downtown Decatur will be closed from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday, March 23, for Spring Movie Night. This event is free to the public. More information can be found here.

How to manage

The closure will occur between the 335 West Ponce condo parking garage entrance and Ponce de Leon Place. Vehicles will be able to detour around the area using Ponce de Leon Place and Fairview Avenue.

Touch-a-Budget is Tomorrow

Come out to the Square from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20th to experience the City’s proposed spending plan for FY18-19.  In addition to learning about the city’s plans for spending in the July 2018 – June 2019 fiscal year, the expo will feature music, food and prizes. A few of our city vehicles will be parked in the East Court Square turn around so since you were unable to make it to last Saturday’s Touch a Truck event due to the drizzle, take this chance to check some things out (before the rescheduled event on May 5th.) The event is free and open to everyone in the community.

Should the weather keep us from being outdoors, the event will be moved to the Decatur Recreation Center (231 Sycamore Street.) Stay tuned for updated information.
