The Decatur Business Association held its annual Holiday Party in December.  In addition to honoring Decatur’s Hometown Heroes, they celebrated a successful 2009 by honoring outgoing officers and electing new officers for 2010.

The Decatur Business Association contributes to our community in many ways including producing several successful events and festivals such as Concerts on the Square, Blue Sky Concerts, Beach Party, Bonfire/Marshmallow Roast, Breakfast With Santa, and the Easter Egg Hunt.

The organization consists of volunteers, including their officers and committee chairs.  A big shout out goes to outgoing treasurer Laura Bevins, who served the organization as a volunteer for 10 years.  She is pictured with her very own street sign as a special parting gift.

2009 President Ann Berg also received a special sign for her contribution as president and president elect of the organization.  She is pictured with incoming president Scott Drake.

It is membership time for DBA so take a minute to check out the Decatur Business Association website for information about all they do to make our community a better place.

Decatur announced its newest 2009 Hometown Heroes at the Decatur Business Association Holiday Party at the Holiday Inn Decatur Conference Plaza.  Hometown Heroes are those folks that work, mostly behind the scenes, to make our community a better place to live and work.  And they work for free!

Decatur started its Hometown Hero program at the close of the 1996 Summer Games after our Hometown to the World Festival during the Olympics.  We put on a 10-day festival thanks to hundreds of volunteers who helped make it happen.

This year marks the 13th year of honoring volunteers and we now have 217 Hometown Heroes.  You can see the photos from each year at City Hall – they are on the wall that goes down the steps to the City Commission Meeting Room.

Pictured here with our City Commissioners are our newest Hometown Heroes – Bill & Vicki Ainslie, Michelle Bray, Bill Bryson, Greg & Nicole Coleson, Mary & Bill Flad, Gary Kronick, Dot Moye, Mercedes Pasqualetti, and Vernita Pinto.

Thanks for all you do for Decatur!

As part of the capital improvements program the City is looking into redesigning the rail road crossings at McDonough and Candler streets. Attendees at the community workshop on November 12 discussed how to make the intersections safer for all users.

How would you redesign the intersections? What is currently the most dangerous aspect of the crossings? Would you be interested in a quiet zone? We want to know your thoughts on these and other questions on the Open City Hall rail road crossing page. We already have three great responses and looking forward to reading more.

What Are Your Thoughts?

We gathered a lot of great information from last month’s public input meetings and we want to hear more! Don’t believe me? Well, to prove how much we want your opinion on the cultural arts in Decatur we have not one, but TWO, ways you can share your thoughts on the subject:

1.) Decatur Cultural Arts Master Plan survey

2.) Cultural Arts Open City Hall page

Fill out the survey or write down your thoughts on Open City Hall, or if you really want to make our day, do both!

Decatur Online Holiday Video

Andrea Berry with eLife Magazine has a great idea for a Decatur holiday video card. She just sent us the details and we love it:

We want YOU to be part of Decatur’s first city-wide holiday video card. Here’s how to participate:

It’s simple! Just decide what you want to include: a photo, a note, a drawing or a short video of no more than 45-seconds.

The only rules are that your submission has to be holiday-related and it must be emailed to us by December 7, 2009.

Email your submission to aberry@elifemagazine.net. It can be just from you or from your whole family! We’ll put it with the other submissions and post it online with our Decatur Blog partners, during the week of December 7th.

Be as creative as you want to be! We look forward to receiving your greeting!

Thank you to everyone who came out to the public input meetings for the Cultural Arts Master Plan last week. The large amount of community involvement in the city’s planning processes is what sets Decatur apart from the rest and last week’s meetings were no different. Andrea Berry filmed the public input meeting from Wednesday for eLife Magazine. We had a great turn-out, but for those of you who were unable to make it, take a look:

Update: For those of you who were unable to make it, we would still love your input! Visit the Cultural Arts Open City Hall page and let us know your thoughts.
