The Waldorf School of Atlanta and Academe of the Oaks hosted more than 250 Waldorf teachers and administrators at the 2010 AWSNA Summer Conference on the campus of Agnes Scott College.  AWSNA, the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America, is the membership organization for more than 250 Waldorf schools in North America and this is the first time they have held the conference in the southeast.

Rhonda Wildman sent us some of the Decatur experiences shared by conference participants including:

FarmBurger was a big hit – especially the veggie burger and the fried okra.  People loved the food at Farmstead 303 – on the day they visited, they were thrilled to be greeted by former President Jimmy Carter.  One group frequented The Iberian Pig four times during their week-long stay in Decatur.  The sandwiches from Badda Bing and Nectar were very popular.  And finally, there were many sightings of Squash Blossom shopping bags during the duration of the conference.

The Waldorf School and Academe of the Oaks were proud to host this annual conference and proud to share all that Decatur has to offer.  One of the conference participants noted on the evaluation, “Decatur gets a 10 out of 10 for beauty, graciousness and fabulous hosting and hospitality.”

Beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, Aug. 3, Comcast will be installing cable underground near the intersection of Clairemont and E. Ponce de Leon Avenues. To assist with the process, the City of Decatur will temporarily shut down the area that’s designated for the Marta Stop/Loading area at the corner of Clairemont and Ponce as well as two parking spots.

Comcast will be removing a section of the sidewalk where The Masonic Temple Building and the Watkins Building join. There will be approximately 80 feet of asphalt removal and restoration during the project, which should be complete by Thursday, Aug. 5. The work will be done over the course of 3 business days during the day. There will be no evening or night work.

Comcast sent a letter to all the businesses effected by the construction and we’d appreciate it if our readers could help spread the word.

PAL and Dog Whisperer

Photo from The Champion

Many of you might know Jeremiah McClendon as one of the City’s PALs (Parking, Assistance, Liason), but did you also know that he’s a dog whisperer? Well, at least I think of him as a dog whisperer. He teaches dog obedience classes at the Rec throughout the year. One of our co-workers says that Jeremiah had her dog so well trained that the dog would sit as soon as he heard Jeremiah coming down the hall. That’s a good enough recommendation for me, but if you want to learn more, check out the article The Champion wrote about him.

Hey All:

As most of you know, Billy and Kristin Allin’s wonderful restaurant Cakes and Ale will be relocating to the historic square.  They are working with Rosebriar Partnerships, the owners of the storefronts, to peel off the layers of bad 1960’s updates.  We’ve got pictures of what those buildings look like under the tarps.

Check out the cool tile roof!

Much of the original brick and beadboard trim is still on the facade.

I’m having trouble deciding what I am more excited about, the restoration of the buildings or the promise of a bakery with real bagels!  Either way, Decatur’s square will be changed forever and big Kudos goes to the Allins and Rosebriar Partnership for making this happen in our city!

Google Fiber Lives On

Some of you may remember earlier this spring how we joined with four other cities in metro Atlanta to apply for Google’s Fiber for Communities project. Need to jog your memory? Check out our Google Fiber for Communities posts here, here and here.

With over 1,100 community submissions Google has yet to choose the lucky test community, but they did recently create a Google Fiber page. It contains information on fiber, how to improve broadband in communities and this great thank you video:

Decatur Metro already posted a photo of Renfroe Garden’s new art piece earlier this week, but we love it so much that we wanted to post some images here too. Not only is the garden back in tip top shape, it now has a great piece of garden art. Three cheers for DREAM Camp’s All Girls Green Team and city employees who all had a hand in making it!

A couple of us are in Las Vegas for the Transforming Local Government conference. During the awards lunch today, the City of Decatur won an award for our Open City Hall program. (Apologies for the grainy photo – I only have my camera phone with me).

The City of Decatur was one of the pilot cities for Open City Hall, an online forum for civic engagement. If you’ve never used Open City Hall before and are a resident of Decatur, check it out on the city’s website here. We’re currently looking for feedback on the 2010/2011 proposed budget.

Gather up the children and head over to the Old Courthouse Square in downtown Decatur for the last of this month’s Blue Sky Concerts. Douglas Brake and the Sizzle Hiss Pop Band will be performing from noon until 1 pm. Bring the kids on down for an hour of crazy fun music, singing and dancing. Original songs include a celebration of the sound and smell of cooking bacon and the daily challenge of locating small, misplaced shoes!

Join us on the Square for this special children’s concert- but beware, even the adults will find themselves smiling and singing along!

The Decatur Business Association produces the  Blue sky Concert with presenting sponsor SunTrust Bank. This week’s co-sponsors are Lotus of Life, Kaiser Permanente and Little Shop of Stories.
