MLK Service Project Recap

City of Decatur Volunteer Coordinator, Lee Ann Harvey, sent this over to everyone at the City yesterday and I wanted to share it with our readers:

We entered the week leading into the 2011 Martin Luther King Jr. Service Project with much trepidation following the snow and ice event that had virtually brought the metropolitan area to a standstill. On Saturday morning, ice still covered the streets, sidewalks and parking lots and ice-coated snow blanketed yards. We were concerned whether we would have enough volunteers to make repairs at the homes. If yard work volunteers came, we wondered if they would even be able to rake and to do other yard work. Thankfully, the weather began looking up. On Saturday, a small army of volunteers went to homes to make repairs. Other volunteers who had come to rake yards worked instead to remove snow and ice from walkways and ramps at senior citizens’ home. By Sunday and Monday, the project was back on track. A miracle occurred in Decatur. A total of 1,234 volunteers came over the three-day project and many of them worked multiple shifts throughout the weekend. Unbelievably, this was slightly more volunteers than there were last year. Even more unbelievably, we were able to surpass the number of homes worked on last year. This year, we did repairs on a total of 16 homes. Yard work was done on these homes plus another 48 homes. This brought us to a record number of 64 senior citizens’ homes that were worked on by volunteers!

City of Decatur residents, businesses and DBA members be on the lookout for the January/February issue of the Decatur Focus – we are debuting an entirely new look with glossy paper that is SFI (Sustainable Forestry Initiative) certified and has six extra pages of copy and two extra pages of advertising.

We always have more information than we can squeeze into the issue and this will allow us the space to add more photos and more details thus continuing to keep residents and businesses up-to-date with what is happening in the City of Decatur.  We have had a waiting list of advertisers for years so this will give them a little more space as well.

We started the Focus in June 1990 as a black and white publication.  Through the years as technology improved, we upgraded the look without substantially increasing the cost.  Several years ago we went to full color and, now, with this issue, we are changing the paper slightly and expanding by eight pages.

Our next initiatives will be to put the Focus online in an easier to read format than a PDF with the ability to click immediately on links within the publication and to send electronic mid-month Focus updates.  But that is for another day…in the meantime, enjoy the new look and send us your information to share as well as your feedback.

A note from City of Decatur Volunteer Coordinator Lee Ann Harvey:

“Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” – You might have associated this quote with the U.S. Postal Service. This year, it is the creed of Decatur’s 9th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Service Project. The volunteer planning committee has been busily working all week to prepare for this weekend. We are looking forward to hundreds of volunteers showing up to do home repairs and yard work to help our seniors live safely, comfortably and affordably in their own homes. There is a warming trend this weekend.

It will still be a bit cold on Saturday morning, so those interested in doing yard work might want to consider signing up for another shift. We will still be doing some yard work on Saturday morning. Home repairs will continue all weekend as planned. We would especially love more volunteers who can do home repairs or are fairly proficient with carpentry. We also still could use some additional volunteers with trucks who could pick up additional supplies at the Edgewood Lowes and deliver them to the homes in Oakhurst, especially on Saturday and Sunday afternoons and all day on Monday. There are other opportunities to help with checking out and checking in tools. If you are familiar with yard work, please consider joining us as a Yard Work Captain.

DeKalb County Watershed Management will be repairing a collapsed sewer main in the area of 321 Hillcrest Avenue starting on Monday, November 22, 2010, at approximately 8:30am. Complete road closure is likely which will prohibit vehicular access past the intersection with Springdale Street. Everyone who does not want to risk being blocked in should move their car from the affected construction area to an area on Springdale Street or south of Springdale Street towards Sycamore Drive.  DeKalb County will attempt to keep the road open as long as possible. Residents not in the affected area are asked to park in their driveway if available and reserve on street parking for residents who are unable to drive past the construction work. A reserve Decatur Fire Engine will be staged in the area for the duration of the work in case emergency services are needed.

DeKalb County Watershed Management can be contacted at 770-621-7230 or 770-270-6243 and staff will be onsite on Monday.

Anyone with special needs is asked to call David Junger at the Decatur Public Works Department at 404-377-5571.

Parking restrictions will begin on Monday, November 22, 2010 at approximately 8:30am. Repair work will be completed as quickly as possible to minimize disruption to property access as well as prevent any further backup of sewage into homes. The repair may take up to three days to complete.
