Baskin Robbins is “scooping up thanks” for firefighters on Wednesday, April 27 at the 5th annual 31 Cent Scoop Night.  At all Baskin Robbins locations nationwide from 5 – 10 p.m. they will offer their 2.5 oz ice cream scoop for 31 cents.  In addition, they will donate $100,000 to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF).  The NFFF honors America’s fallen heroes and their families by developing and expanding programs to recognize fallen heroes and assist their families and co-workers.

So, what does that have to do with the City of Decatur?

Well, Bill Mitchell, Baskin-Robbins Vice President, grew up in Decatur and as part of the celebration, he visited Decatur’s Fire Station #2 this afternoon.  He brought samples of Baskin-Robbins April Flavor of the Month – Firehouse #31 – created in honor of 31 Cent Scoop Night.

Today also happens to be Decatur Firefighter/Driver Jim Palmer’s birthday so he got the first scoop!

If you like atomic fireballs or cinnamon candies mixed with vanilla ice cream, you will love Firehouse #31.  Bill Mitchell is pictured at the top of the post with Fire Chief Toni Dixon and the firefighters.  Welcome home Bill!

Energy Ace- reception area

Energy Ace was founded by Wayne Robertson in 2002 as a single-source, full service sustainability consulting firm. In June 2010, Energy Ace opened its headquarters in the Fidelity Bank building at 160 Clairemont Road.  Not only is the new facility beautiful, it is dual certified in both LEED Gold and Green Globes certification programs.  I’ve toured the facility, and wanted to take a few moments to share some of their accomplishments.

Energy Ace specializes in green buildings, energy conservation and environmental stewardship, and they certainly are leading by example with their new building.  Their slogan, “Green Made Simple,”  shines through in all elements of the design.  The picture above is of the reception area which features re-used glass panels, carpet tiles made from recycled materials, and bamboo wall coverings.

Quick Facts:

  • Energy Ace optimized energy performance through a 30% lighting power reduction
  • Daylighting controls are in place for 50% of the lighting load
  • Occupancy sensors are in place for 75% of the connected lighting load
  • 40% of the materials used contain post consumer and pre consumer content recycled content
  • 37% of the materials used were from within a 500 mile radius
  • 14% of the materials used were rapidly renewable
  • 54% of the wood used was Forest Stewardship Council certified

The photo to the right is Wayne’s office.  Those beautiful floor to ceiling glass panels reduce the demand for interior lighting, the bamboo floor is a rapidly renewable material, and the furniture was from a sustainable manufacturer. Click the photos below for more detail on the elements of the room.

.

.
If you want to learn more about the Energy Ace office or the services they provide, visit www.energyace.com or check out the video below and hear Wayne describe the new building himself.  The City of Decatur has an ongoing commitment to creating a sustainable community, and we are lucky to have leaders like Wayne Robertson and Energy Ace working to make our City green.

TOMs, the shoe copy that donates a pair of shoes every time you buy a pair, is hosting One Day Without Shoes today, April 5, 2011. So take off your shoes for the day and remember that in many developing countries, children have to walk barefoot for miles to school, clean water and medical help.

Both Squash Blossom and Little Shop of Stories are celebrating One Day Without Shoes.

Bring this coupon with you between 3-6 p.m., leave your shoes at home, and get 10% off your Squash Blossom purchase. The boutique will be selling TOMs (including kids and mens sizes) plus celebrating the day with snacks, music and a bedazzler (for your TOMs, not your feet).

You can also get 10% off at Little Shop of Stories if you come in without shoes. The 11 a.m. storytime will include stories about helping others, doing good in the community and about feet.
