Can anyone tell me when the existing senior homestead exemption expires. Is it at the end of 2020 or the end of 2021? And does a change have to go thru the legislature?
Did you ever get an answer to your questions, David? I have not received a reply to mine.
The homestead exemption known as the S-4 exemption for homeowners over the age of 65 with no income restriction will expire at the end of 2021. The S-1, S-2, S-3, and GS-1 school exemptions will remain in effect with no expiration. Yes, a change would need to go through the legislature.
I wonder and hope you can answer how many homeowners in our community have signed up for the senior exemption since it was first introduced? I volunteer with seniors and know of a few who did not have a clue that such an exemption existed, so I expect that others have not actually taken advantage of it.
I will state the obvious—that it is a fair way to repay those who have contributed to school taxes for many years, several of whom do not have children including those who haven’t taken advantage of the school system by choosing to send their children to private schools or are involved in home schooling.
I am sure retirees would like to age-in-place in their homes but the high taxes and their fixed incomes prevent them from staying in the City of Decatur. Giving seniors an incentive to continue to live in their homes is the right thing to do. I hope the exemption will be voted in again by the residents.
I heard a suggestion shared by another neighbor that may be worth considering. Perhaps the exemption should apply to those residents who have lived in the city for a certain number of years or qualify in some way. The exemption might be based on a percentage beginning at age 60 and culminating at age 65?
Was the meeting recorded. Can I view it? Thank You.
