Dine out in Decatur on October 18 to support the Decatur MLK Jr. Service Project.

A percentage of the day’s proceeds goes to the Decatur MLK Service Project, a large-scale volunteer initiative to help low income seniors live safely, comfortably and affordably in their homes by completing needed repairs, weatherizing, adding handicap accessible features and doing yard work.

The details

An old terra cotta sanitary sewer collapsed on East Howard Avenue this afternoon during construction of the downtown Decatur storm drainage improvements. This required closing the short section of East Howard Avenue between North Candler and East Trinity Place.

How to manage

Westbound traffic on East Howard headed for North McDonough Street will need to detour around this area until repairs are completed. Presently, the detour runs north on North Candler from East Howard to Sycamore Street.

The Decatur Youth Council

The City of Decatur is looking for high school students for its first ever youth council.decatur-youth-council-logo (2)

The Decatur Youth Council (DYC) is a city-sponsored, community-based, leadership program for high school students who live in incorporated Decatur.  Members of the DYC will develop into young leaders through structured monthly educational programs and team-building activities. The program is open to high school-aged students who attend public, private, and home-based schools and who live in the Decatur city limits.

Applications are now being accepted for the first term that will begin in January 2017.

Today is the first Wednesday of October so we’ll be testing the tornado outdoor warning sirens at 5:00 p.m. The test should last approximately one minute. Should the weather become inclement, the test will be postponed until tomorrow, 6 October 2016.

Oakhurst Porchfest

The Decatur High School Musical Theatre Ensemble is performing during Porchfest at 202 Kings Highway, noon.

The 2nd Annual Oakhurst Porchfest is this Saturday, Oct. 8, noon-6 p.m. It’s a grassroots music festival that’s resident owned and operated. This year there are 185 performances and porches so make sure to check out the map to plan your day.

Walk, bike, or take MARTA to Oakhurst so you won’t have to spend all of your time worrying about where to park.
