Wine Festival this Saturday

Housing Authority wins EarthCraft Award

The Housing Authority of the City of Decatur, Georgia was named Multifamily Project of the Year by Southface and the Greater Atlanta Home Builders Association at the EarthCraft Celebration of Excellence held at the Southface Eco Office in Atlanta.  EarthCraft, the Southeast’s premier green building program, promotes energy efficient, healthy, comfortable and durable new construction and renovation.

The Decatur Housing Authority and NorSouth Construction were honored for leadership and excellence in green building design and construction for Oliver House, a multifamily senior living development in downtown Decatur.  The project exemplifies high-performance green building and includes features such as a 50 kWh photovoltaic system, a Huber Zip weather resistant barrier, and geothermal HVAC and water heating.  The award was presented by David Ellis, executive vice president of the Greater Atlanta HBA, and Dennis Creech, executive director of Southface, in the presence of over 100 industry leaders at the Southface Eco Office.

Celebrate National Food Day Right Here in Decatur

A nationwide celebration and a movement for healthy, affordable, & sustainable food. 

Food Day was created by the nonprofit Center for Science in the Public Interest in 2011 to bring people together in celebration of healthy an affordable food produced in a sustainable way.  More than 2,300 events were held in all 50 states. This year, Atlanta has lots of local Food Day events to keep you full and happy, with 2 events right here in Decatur!

Celebrate Food Day by shopping at the Decatur Farmers Market on Wednesday, October 24! Bring a blanket or chair, grab some delicious picnic food and walk across the street to our Food Day Eat-In outside of the First Baptist Church and enjoy your fresh, local food with fellow Food Day supporters. Local musicians will provide entertainment.

Potluck and Volunteer Day with Decatur’s Kitchen Garden

Global Growers will celebrate and build the movement towards healthy, affordable and sustainable foods by hosting a volunteer work day and potluck lunch at Decatur’s Kitchen Garden. Activities for the day include wood chipping, orchard cleanup and other around-the-garden fall activities.

Start thinking about the weekend now

Just to put a bug in your ear, there are a couple of really cool things happening around Decatur this pre-Halloween weekend. For starters, Big Tex Decatur has their second annual fall block party going on this Saturday and its sure to be a fine time. Free live music, UGA vs FL on the big screens, a wing eating contest, and prizes for the best costume…you don’t want to miss it.

Decatur Market and Gallery will be holding a “Back to the 80’s” anniversary party the same day with complimentary hors d’oeuvres, wine, and an outdoor market.

On Sunday you don’t want to miss the 2nd annual Homegrown Halloween Parade through downtown- floats, hearses, marching bands, and costumes galore!  Line up starts at 3:00pm in the Decatur Post Office Parking lot and steps off at 4:00pm heading down Ponce de Leon Ave towards the Square.

October Fab Friday at Heliotrope and Boogaloos

It’s the Friday we all look forward to every month on West Ponce – Fab Friday! That’s this Friday, Oct. 26 at 6 p.m. Both Heliotrope and Boogaloos will be offering 20% off on all full price merchandise along with some nibbles (e.g. wine and hor d’oeuvres). Boogaloos closes at 9p.m. and Heliotrope closes at 11 p.m. Just one more reason to look forward to the weekend.

ZTF issues on Open City Hall

The Zoning Update Task Force (ZTF) has studied several zoning issues over the past year at the direction of the 2010 Strategic Plan. The link above will take you to a forum on Open City Hall which outlines the recommendations to date of the ZTF. They would like your input. The topics include accessory dwelling setbacks, transition standards between residential and downtown commercial properties, community gardens and home based businesses among others.

Public Meeting Regarding Annexation

As many of you are aware, the Decatur City Commission is currently considering an annexation plan that includes areas to northwest, northeast and southeast of the existing city boundaries. In an effort to gain a better understanding of how current residents and potential residents feel about the plan, the City Commission is holding a public meeting regarding annexation from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday, October 22, 2012. The Square will be Hoppin' this Saturday

In case you haven’t heard, there is a tiny event planned for this Saturday on the Square in downtown Decatur called the Decatur Craft Beer Festival. (we kid, tiny=4,000 people) The event sold out weeks ago but there is still fun to be had if you weren’t one of the lucky ones to get tickets. What kind of fun you ask? How about the 2nd annual Decatur Root Beer Festival hosted by Little Shop of Stories? Get more information from their blog here.
