Reeves Contracting  will start laying storm drainage pipe across East Trinity Place tomorrow, installing new inlets on both sides of the street and working its way to the eastern end of the project at Decatur Fire Station No. 1.

Reeves will use lane closures and short detours in order to keep East Trinity Place open for two-way traffic, so expect traffic delays.

Reeves Contracting  has installed about 200 linear feet of new 48” storm drainage pipe through the parking lot at 215 Church Street. Next week, Reeves will continue work towards Decatur Fire Station No. 1 (shown in the background of the photo below).  Crossing East Trinity Place and installing new inlets at Fire Station No. 1 will be the next big challenge.

Once the new storm line is in place at the firehouse, Reeves will begin installing a new storm line and inlets on Church Street.

Both East Maple Street and Church Street are open to regular traffic at present.  Once work begins on the new Church Street storm line, traffic will be limited to one-way in the southbound direction where construction activity is taking place.

Reeves Contracting completed installation of one junction box in Church Street and will finish the second box early next week.  Once both junction boxes are installed, new catch basins and inlets will be installed to connect existing storm lines to the new drainage system.

Reeves also will complete the replacement of the old water lines on East Maple Street.  This will require shutting water service for a period of time.  This work will be done after midnight to minimize the inconvenience.  A notice will be emailed when this work is scheduled.

Traffic control measures have been established on Church Street until it is reopened, so expect traffic delays in this area.

Reeves Contracting will continue grading and laying the base for the reconstruction of East Maple Street.  AT&T continues its replacement of the underground telephone cable on North McDonough Street.  Reeves is still waiting for a stretch of dry weather to install new curbing and sidewalks.

There will be a water service interruption on Monday, August 5, from 11 am to 2 pm, to install a temporary water line along the side of the DeKalb Rape Crisis Center building.  This will allow shoring to be installed so that the building can be stabilized and the rest of the north storm line can be built.

The new water line is being installed down the middle of East Maple Street.  Because East Maple Street is so narrow, a portion of the water line must be run through a couple of the new storm drainage structures. The photos show a casing in the new structure and the water line being inserted into the casing.  The casing  is designed to protect the water line.

Traffic control measures will remain in place on North McDonough Street, so expect traffic delays.

Reeves Contracting has begun staking out the new curbing and sidewalks on East Maple Street and will be grading the area through the beginning of the week.  If the weather cooperates, new curbing will be installed starting late in the week with new sidewalks to follow. A new water line will be installed down the middle of East Maple Street with new service connections to all buildings.

AT&T continues its replacement of the underground telephone cable on North McDonough Street.  As soon as this is completed, new drainage inlets will be installed on both corners at North McDonough Street and East Maple and repaving of North McDonough and East Maple will start.

The Rape Crisis Center building will be stabilized starting the week of July 29.  Once this is completed, the new 48” storm line will be extended to Church Street and a new phase of the work will begin.

Traffic control measures will remain in place on North McDonough Street, so expect traffic delays.

Rainy weather and a broken sanitary sewer were this week’s challenges.   Work should be finished shoring up the LexTechs shop at North McDonough and East Maple in the next day or so.  Once this is completed, Reeves Contracting will resume installation of the new  54” storm line and a new water line on East Maple Street.

AT&T will soon replace a telephone cable on North McDonough Street and a portion of North McDonough Street will be repaved. It is expected that completion of the storm and water lines on East Maple Street will take 6-8 weeks.

Once the work nears Church Street, Reeves plans to install new sidewalks and pave East Maple Street.  This should allow restoration of vehicle access to the properties on East Maple Street from North McDonough.

Traffic control measures will remain in place on North McDonough Street, so expect traffic delays.

Reeves Contracting made considerable progress on the new south drainage line last week and is almost up to the driveway at the East Maple Street Townhouses. An unmarked gas line was hit providing some unanticipated excitement.

Work will continue this week on the new south  line while the contractor shores up the area next to the LexTechs shop at North McDonough and East Maple.  Once shoring is complete, Reeves will resume laying the new north line.

Traffic control measures will remain in place on North McDonough Street, so expect traffic delays.

Work bogged down last week as the contractor dealt with a conflict between a large underground telephone cable and the new water line as well as the need to shore up the sidewalk area next to the LexTechs shop at North McDonough and East Maple. AT&T will replace the telephone cable.  The shoring required drilling holes in the street and lowering I-beams 30 feet into the ground.  Steel plates or wood lagging will be installed next week between the I-beams.

Once the shoring is in place, installation of the new  54” storm line will continue.  As soon as the work clears the intersection, 4 lanes of North McDonough Street will be repaved.

Traffic control measures will remain in place on North McDonough Street, so expect traffic delays.

Both structures (i.e., manholes) on the east side of North McDonough Street have been set and the first “stick” of 54” pipe has been installed in the south line on East Maple Street. This area is a jumble of underground utilities – water and lines, gas lines, power, telecommunication facilities including phone and fiber optic lines.  Several private storm drainage lines have been encountered as well.  These will be connected to the new system.

This week, the contractor will continue efforts  to clear North McDonough and begin the repaving process.

Traffic control measures will remain in place on North McDonough Street, so expect traffic delays.

The proposed location of the new 48” north storm line has slowed construction somewhat due to utility conflicts  and the line’s proximity to existing construction.  A leaking water line in Church Street created a cavity and a sinkhole last week as well.  This was repaired by DeKalb County.  Once these issues are resolved, the contractor will continue laying new storm pipe and setting a new manhole for the  north storm line.

The photo below shows a type of storm drainage facility that you don’t see too often – a hand-built, double-wall brick culvert.  This is an indication of the age of the system being replaced.

Traffic control measures will remain in place on North McDonough Street, so expect traffic delays.
