Taco Mac by Dawn Kinney Martin

Atlanta artist Dawn Kinney Martin will be featured at a reception at the Decatur Gallery this coming Saturday, from 5 until 10 pm. Dawn is an Atlanta-based artist with national and international collectors. Each year she photographs landscapes and structures during her travels and paints from these photos throughout the year. Dawn has also become a favorite for her depictions of local landmarks such as Taco Mac and the Highland Pub.

The Gallery will provide light hors d’oeuvres and beverages during the reception. Plus if the weather is pleasant, they will open their outdoor artist market in front of the Gallery and try and coax Dawn into doing a painting demonstration! Sounds like a great way to spend a Saturday evening in Decatur!

I just received a call from the ING Georgia Marathon folks who were happy to inform us that Decatur WON the Neighborhood Challenge!! Yea!! Thanks to the citizens, the Seed & Feed Band, the city employees and everyone else that helped us make this event a success. I am still amazed that so many people stood in the “cold mist” and cheered the runners on for hours. We were still there when the last runners trotted by.

Our prize is $3000 which will be put towards a fitness initiative. The city will use the money to “jump start” a new walking program, Walk There Decatur!

Thanks again to everyone who helped Decatur win and show the runners what a great city we live in!

The Seed & Feed Band Joins in the Fun

Thanks to everyone who came out early Sunday morning to cheer on the runners in the ING Georgia Marathon. Despite the rain and the cool weather, we had a great cheering section in downtown Decatur, as well as two well staffed Hydration Stations. It was great having the Seed & Feed Band playing music and community members from all over Decatur, with a large contingent from Decatur Heights. I can’t wait to find out if we won and will post here when I learn the results.

Thanks again Decatur!

The weather has a feeling of Spring so get outside and enjoy yourself in Decatur this weekend.

Saturday morning, Decatur Active Living presents “Touch-a-Truck” Day from 10 am until 1 pm in the Callaway Building Parking lot located on the corner of Trinity and Commerce Drive. More details in previous post.

The ING Marathon will be coming through Decatur on Sunday so come out and join our official Cheering Section. New location this year: we will line the streets of in front of the Old Courthouse to cheer on the runners as they come down Ponce de Leon and turn onto Clairemont. I will be on the square at 7 am and have lots of pom-poms, cow bells and other cheering “necessities”. The Marching Abominables will be joining us this year, so come out and join the fun as we compete to win the “Neighborhood Challenge”.

Decatur High School presents Hamlet, which runs Friday and Saturday night at the new DHS Performing Arts Center. The show begins at 7:30 pm and tickets are available at the door for $8. I saw the show last night and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Walk or bike around downtown Decatur or Oakhurst. Grab a coffee or lunch to go and enjoy it on the Square or in Harmony Park; or dine at one of the many fine restaurants. Bet those patios will be open and hopping this weekend.

Stop in at one of your favorite boutiques and buy something to put a “spring” in your step or wardrobe.
