angela

Looking for something to do tonight, and on a tight budget? Karen Skellie writes in that Angela Easterling will be appearing at the Decatur Library tonight at 7 pm and the performance is free.

“Angela was raised in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains and her country roots run deep.  Her unique sound and soulful writing display her enchanting brand of neo-traditionalist country that mixes hard-edged honky tonk with fetching ballads.  You’ll hear a hint of gospel and authentic acoustic instruments, but she’s not your usual country girl.”

I have been quite impressed with the number of  free activities offered at the Decatur Branch. GA Center for the Book brings in great authors, and Karen has been bringing in some popular music performances. This is all in addition to being able to borrow books, DVDs, CDs, Books on Tape……the list goes on.  My son and I visit at least once a week.

Great work Library folks!!

We are so excited that Decatur is among the first around to install solar powered trash compactors! The compactors are being installed in front of Starbuck’s and Java Monkey as we speak. Jerry Knotts and his crew are working hard to get them going and I can’t wait to see them in action.

Jerry Knotts shows off the new compactors.

New and more visible recycling bins are being installed as well, but they won’t compact. Hopefully these additions will be a big hit and we will see them popping up around the city soon.

The City of Decatur has two new firefighter/EMTs who have life paths that have crossed many times. Francisco Albizu and Justin Sardine went to the same high school in Miami at the same time, but never met. Both have held jobs in different fields, with one being that Albizu worked for Costco and Sardine worked for Sams Wholesale club in the same competitive territory of Kendall, FL at the same time. Still, they never met. Years later, their paths crossed again, here in the City of Decatur. Sardine and Albizu are new EMT/firefighters working on the same shift at Fire Station #1. Both have been married 15 years and have two children each.

Their paths crossed many times, but the City of Decatur finally brought them together as co-workers and friends!

Decatur Cemetery gazeboFrom Susan at the Decatur Preservation Alliance:

“To honor the veterans buried in Decatur Cemetery, the Friends of Decatur Cemetery (FODC), a project of Decatur Preservation Alliance, will place flags on the graves followed by a ceremony on Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11.

We need your help!  FODC is in the process of identifying the 700 to 1,000 veterans’ graves in the cemetery by doing walking surveys.  If you would like to help locate these graves, there are two opportunities:  this Saturday, July 25, beginning at 9 a.m. or next Wednesday, July 29, at 9 a.m.  We will meet at the cemetery office, and we promise that you will find this interesting!

Please contact Nancie Sill, who is in charge of the survey, if you have any questions or to let her know that you are coming to help.  Nancie’s email address is nanciesill@comcast.net,  or you may call her at 404.247.8888.  Also, if you know of a veteran’s gravesite and want to make sure it’s included, please let Nancie know.

We are grateful to Victoria Collier of The Elder and Disability Law Firm of Victoria L. Collier, PC, for her generous sponsorship of this project.”

Sounds like a fun way to spend some time outside in this fabulous green space.

Fox Network will be in the Atlanta and Decatur area filming an upcoming series “Past Life”. They will be filming for the next eight months and the show will premiere in February.

From Givememyremote.com:

past-life

Have you ever experienced déjà vu or met someone you thought seemed familiar? Do you believe in karma, fate or love at first sight? From writer David Hudgins (Friday Night Lights) and inspired by the book “The Reincarnationist” by M.J. Rose, comes PAST LIFE, a new drama series about an unlikely pair of past-life detectives who investigate whether what is happening to you today is the result of who you were before.

For more information, visit http://scifi.about.com/b/2009/05/16/fox-orders-past-life.htm.

The show sounds like a lot of fun and we always enjoy looking for Decatur in shows filmed here. I look forward to having them here in Decatur and will keep everyone updated.
