I am looking forward to attending the Oakhurst Arts & Music Festival this weekend, held in Harmony Park. I really enjoy the community feel of this festival, as well as the opportunity to buy art and especially jewelry from some local artists. Ann Finley is one of my favorite jewelry artists and she will be there with her new creations in enamel. Erin Smith is another local favorite. Erin is the wife of Fred Smith, owner of Mojo Pizza in Oakhurst. Speaking of food, I also enjoy sitting outside one of the many restuarants around Harmony Park and having a “yummy” lunch or dinner.

The festival begins at 10am and lasts until 7pm. If you are an early bird, be sure to come at 8am for the Oakhurst 5K Arts Run which begins in front of One Step At A Time. Musical entertainment is ongoing and wraps up with a concert by Heaven Davis Band from 5 until 7pm. Free children’s activities begin at 10am and the parade is at 2pm.

I hope you can join me and the community at this great fall family event. See you at Harmony Park!

The Decatur Minute Goes Live

Welcome to The Decatur Minute, a blog written by employees in the Community & Economic Development Department of the City of Decatur.  We are excited to enter the blogosphere and welcome any and all comments, ideas, suggestions, and information to share.  We will give you the latest on special events, volunteer opportunities, new businesses, things to see and do in Decatur, and more.

Our blog policy is posted on the City of Decatur website and we look forward to ongoing conversations with the community.

We also have links to popular Decatur blogs such as Decatur Metro, nDecatur, Next Stop Decatur and others with Decatur connections.  You will also find links to blogs from our shops and restaurants.  If you know of a Decatur blog that is missing, please let us know.

Check back often – it only takes a minute!

The Great Decatur Beer Festival has sold out of tickets. The event, to be held on Saturday, October 18 from noon until 5pm is a fundraiser which provides grants to community and non-profit organizations in the City of Decatur.

For those of you who did not get tickets, consider attending the Decatur Wine Festival on Saturday, November 1st in downtown Decatur. Tickets are still available for $30 at www.decaturartsalliance.org.

Mingei Madness!

After a nice lunch on the Square, I decided to stop by Mingei World Arts before heading back to the office. I’m so glad I did! Anne and Ellen, co-owners of Mingei, have just returned from a shopping trip in Mexico and they were in the process of unpacking their new finds when I walked in. It was so much fun to see the new reading folk art figures, animal bobble heads (the penguins are too cute), glittered figurines made out of recycled packaging and soda cans, and Day of the Dead skeletons.

A lot is going on at Mingei during the month of October starting with a visit from a silver jeweler from Oaxaca on Oct. 4 & 5 and ending with a 5 year birthday celebration on Nov. 1. Also, mark your calendars for the Oct. 26 Church Street Fall Festival. Participating shops include Mingei, Taste, Hoopla and Java Monkey.

If you like all the handmade treasures at Mingei, make sure to check out Pambili African Artworks in The Artisan building and Gifts on a Mission, a vendor in the McDonough Street Market. Both shops carry handcrafted items from Africa.

Now if only I could get one of these shop owners to take me on a shopping trip with them… 😉

International Visitors

On Thursday, the Community and Economic Development Authority had four mayors from Poland visit the city. They were touring selected cities in the United States to learn more about government. They had many questions about our city government, housing permits and approvals, and special events. They were also interested in our new and old buildings and architecture downtown. After meeting we went for a small walking tour of the downtown area.

Kiosk Fun

One of my favorite things about the wayfinding system is the kiosks on the square. Three out of the four kiosks have a city map on one side and a magnetized bulletin board on the other (the fourth kiosks has a map on both sides).

We use the bulletin boards to announce upcoming special events. Right now you’ll find information on the Concerts on the Square, The Garden Tour, Great Decatur Beer Tasting Festival and the Old House Fair.

I can’t tell you how excited we all get when we see someone looking at the map or reading the posters on the kiosks. I’m not over exaggerating when I say that these are the kind of things that make us happy in the Community & Economic Development department. So go ahead. Check out the kiosks. It’ll make our day.

Creative Loafing’s Best of Atlanta 2008 is hot off the presses and a number of Decatur businesses were mentioned. Personally, I would include nothing but Decatur shops and restaurants in my version of The Best of Atlanta, but I might be a little biased.

Scoot Around Decatur

Anyone else out there jealous of all those people scooting around the city? Scooting around town seems so chic and European – not to mention eco-friendly. Maybe I’m romanticizing scooters too much, but that doesn’t lessen my desire for one of my own. Lucky for me, Decatur now has two great scooter-riding options.

Twist ‘n Scoot has just opened up on West Ponce across from The Grange and next to Whit’s End. The store offers a wide range of new and used scooters (sporty, cute, high performance, vintage styles etc.). I’ve got my eye on this beauty:

While saving up for my very own Stella, I can rent a scooter from Dads Zip Motor Scooter. The company offers scooter sharing services. Depending on the membership plan you choose, you can rent a scooter for as low as $6 a day. Sign up for a ride and a scooter will be delivered to a designated location (there are a number of locations within the City of Decatur), and helmets and gas are included.

I can’t wait. I’ll be scooting around looking chic and European in no time!
