Everything you wanted to know about Planning, Zoning, and Permitting and were too terrifed to ask!

The Planning Department is thrilled to hold a series of Homeowner Nights at City Hall.  What is Homeowner’s Night you ask?  It’s an opportunity for the homeowners in Decatur to meet with the Planning Director, Building Code Official, Building Inspector, Building and Zoning Permit Technician, and Preservation Planner to discuss projects you may be considering for your house.  You can find out what your zoning allows, what construction is required, what inspections will need to occur, and how the heck you pull a permit!  For those of you who live in historic houses, it’s an opportunity to find out about possible tax incentive programs and any local designation requirements (no, we don’t regulate paint color!).

Don't let this happen to you!

Don't let this happen to you!

When does this stupendous event occur?  We are actually holding three of these nights:

Tuesday, August 4th, 6-8 p.m.
Tuesday, October 6th, 6-8 p.m.
Tuesday, December 1st, 6-8 p.m.
Location: Decatur City Hall, Planning Department

A full description of available services can be found here.

The Building Inspector, Paul Wells, will be available by phone between the hours of 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.   The Planning Director, Building Official and Historic Preservation Planner will be available by appointment only.

Decatur Cemetery gazeboFrom Susan at the Decatur Preservation Alliance:

“To honor the veterans buried in Decatur Cemetery, the Friends of Decatur Cemetery (FODC), a project of Decatur Preservation Alliance, will place flags on the graves followed by a ceremony on Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11.

We need your help!  FODC is in the process of identifying the 700 to 1,000 veterans’ graves in the cemetery by doing walking surveys.  If you would like to help locate these graves, there are two opportunities:  this Saturday, July 25, beginning at 9 a.m. or next Wednesday, July 29, at 9 a.m.  We will meet at the cemetery office, and we promise that you will find this interesting!

Please contact Nancie Sill, who is in charge of the survey, if you have any questions or to let her know that you are coming to help.  Nancie’s email address is nanciesill@comcast.net,  or you may call her at 404.247.8888.  Also, if you know of a veteran’s gravesite and want to make sure it’s included, please let Nancie know.

We are grateful to Victoria Collier of The Elder and Disability Law Firm of Victoria L. Collier, PC, for her generous sponsorship of this project.”

Sounds like a fun way to spend some time outside in this fabulous green space.

Fox Network will be in the Atlanta and Decatur area filming an upcoming series “Past Life”. They will be filming for the next eight months and the show will premiere in February.

From Givememyremote.com:

past-life

Have you ever experienced déjà vu or met someone you thought seemed familiar? Do you believe in karma, fate or love at first sight? From writer David Hudgins (Friday Night Lights) and inspired by the book “The Reincarnationist” by M.J. Rose, comes PAST LIFE, a new drama series about an unlikely pair of past-life detectives who investigate whether what is happening to you today is the result of who you were before.

For more information, visit http://scifi.about.com/b/2009/05/16/fox-orders-past-life.htm.

The show sounds like a lot of fun and we always enjoy looking for Decatur in shows filmed here. I look forward to having them here in Decatur and will keep everyone updated.

The Happy Couple

The Happy Couple

NPR reported this week about a young Decatur couple that had an “NPR themed wedding”.  They wanted their wedding to reflect who they are as a couple, they stated in the segment.   They portray their typical mornings around the house as a chorus of NPR coming from different radios in various rooms.  Their friend describes the couple as “progressive minded people… the type of people that NPR loves, and that love NPR!”

Instead of table numbers, they named the tables after their 12 favorite NPR shows.  The bride and groom sat at the “Wait, Wait… Don’t Tell Me!” table. They also re-worked the NPR logo, changing the letters to “M & P”, for Matt & Peggy.

Now really… are any of us suprised that these folks live in Decatur? Here the story by clicking here

I was at Fire Station # 1 this morning and heard the chatter and giggling of little children. Captain Meyers was showing a class from Peachtree Academy in Avondale Estates a Fire Engine after their tour of the station. They were so cute, I couldn’t resist taking their photo. This is just one of the many activities that our wonderful firefighters do when they are not putting out fires, answering emergency medical calls and keeping the City of Decatur safe. Pictured are Captain Meyers and Francisco Albizu with the class and their teachers.

Last month we posted about Mayor Floyd being sworn in as the president of the Georgia Municipal Association (GMA). Well, GMA produced a video feature on our mayor for the event and we’re excited to share it with our blog readers today. Many of you will recognize some familiar faces in the video and even more of you will enjoy the images of a young Bill Floyd.

The July/August Atlanta Now Magazine features 50 Fun Things to See & Do in Atlanta this Summer and Decatur is #45.   Here is what they say:

“Take in the Small Town, City Charm…Just a short MARTA ride east of downtown, Decatur is one of the city’s hippest suburbs, with renovated homes, unique retailers and hot restaurants.  History buffs will enjoy the 1898 Decatur Courthouse and the Historic Cemetery, whose oldest headstone dates to 1827, while shopaholics will love the area’s eclectic galleries and boutiques.  Eateries include Watershed, co-owned by Indigo Girl Emily Saliers.  The rock duo had their start at nearby Eddie’s Attic, still one of Atlanta’s top venues for up-and-coming acoustic acts.”

Many thanks to writer Anya Martin for including us!  Atlanta Now is the Official Visitors Guide of the Atlanta Convention & Visitors Bureau.
