Thank You Decatur!

Thank you to everyone who came out to support Decatur for Haiti night last month. We raised $4,500 for the cause with help from the following businesses: Cakes and Ale, Chick-Fil-A, Decatur Business Association, Decatur Downtown Development Authority, Fleet Feet, Hairwerks, The Iberian Pig, Little Shop of Stories, The Marlay,  Mingei, Nectar, Palate Cafe and Bar, Peggy’s Boutique, Saba, Steinbecks, UJoint and Yogurt Tap.

Tomorrow, March 3rd, the City will conduct its monthly test for the Outdoor Tornado Warning Siren system at 5:00 p.m.

The test will last approximately a minute. If you are  indoors at 5:00 p.m. you may not hear the sirens as they are alarms sounded to alert people who are outdoors that a tornado may be imminent. They are not generally designed to be heard within a home or other building. However, we know that due to the topography of the City and the location of the sirens some of you will hear them while indoors. If you have any questions or comments, please contact Assistant City Manager of Emergency Services Tony Parker at 404-370-4102.

The next test will be Wednesday, April 7th at 5:00 p.m.

Animal Crackers, Whiz Kids and Project REAL programs are closed March 3, 2010 due to weather conditions.

Citizen Survey – Take 3!

The City of Decatur wants to know what citizens really think about their community life and municipal government. Such input helps the City Commission make better-informed decisions and enables city staff to provide quality services that meet real community needs.

To gather such information and insights directly from citizens, the City (with the help of the National Research Center) will randomly select a number of Decatur households to participate in our 3rd citizen survey.  If you are selected to participate you will receive a notification card in the mail beginning, Friday, 26 February 2010.

The 2008 edition of the survey produced a 40% response rate. For more information on the citizen survey and to see results from the previous two surveys, check out the Citizen Survey page on our website.

Public Works just sent out their Neighborhood Cleanup Days schedule for the spring. The cleanup days will take place on Saturdays during April, May and June. The pickup crews will collect yard trimmings, building materials (that are not from the work of private contractors), tires, appliances (not containing Freon), and trash that would not normally be placed in pay-as-you-throw bags. Liquids, dirt, bricks, blocks, stone, rocks, concrete and motor vehicle batteries or parts will not be collected.

To see when your street will have its cleanup day, click on the PDF below. All items to be collected should be placed at the curb no later than 7:30 a.m.

The City of Decatur launched an interactive website today dedicated to the process of updating the Strategic Plan.   Check it out here and find out the who, what, where and why of everything connected with the Plan update.

Citizens interested in volunteering for a series of focused Round Table discussions, repeating the tried-and-true practice of 1998, can sign up on-line.  And you can follow each step of the process as it narrows community concerns to a list of priorities for the next decade.  Following each report, there is a place for comments and ideas.  So plan to stay plugged in and participate.

Decatur followed this same process in 1998 when we shaped the last 10-year Strategic Plan.  Over the past 10 years, Decatur has accomplished over 80 percent of the goals.  A schedule and Round Table plans will be announced soon.  So bookmark www.decaturnext.com and come be a part of the conversation.
