Update: Joe Earle will do a book signing of Images of American Decatur on Saturday, Aug. 14, 4:30-6 p.m. at Eagle Eye Bookshop.

Hot off the presses – Decatur’s history in pictures!

Blue Elephant Book Shop, located on West Ponce across from Farm Burger, just stocked the brand-new, long awaited Images of America: Decatur history book. The book is part of Arcadia Publishing’s Images of America book series and was written by Decatur journalist Joe Earle.

Stop by Blue Elephant today to pick up your copy and brush up on your Decatur lore. You can also call the store at 404-373-1565 to reserve a copy.

Nashville folk rock singer/songwriter Nathan Beaver is scheduled to play two shows at Eddie’s Attic Friday, August 6 for the release of his newest CD, Universal You.

The first show will begin at 7 p.m. with Mike Killeen opening. At the early show, individuals with a valid university student ID can receive

$4 off the cost of their ticket. The show is open to people ages 18 and older.

The second show begins at 9:30 p.m. with Abi Tapia opening. The late show is open to people ages 21 and older.

Tickets for both shows are $12 and are on sale now on the Eddie’s Attic website – www.eddiesattic.com.

“I am excited to return to my favorite music venue for my Atlanta CD release show,” said Beaver. “All of my songs are written and recorded in Georgia and it is such a treat to be able to share my best music with old and new friends.”

Eddie Owen, founder of the famed music venue in downtown Decatur, which nurtured the early careers of John Mayer, Shawn Mullins, Sugarland, and the Indigo Girls, said, “Nathan has talent, pure and simple. Keep an eye on this guy.”

Update (Friday): Good Day Atlanta on Fox featured the Boutique Sale on its Road Warrior segment early this morning. For those of you who are like me and can’t get up early enough to watch the news, check out the videos here.

Decatur’s popular Boutique Warehouse Sale starts tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 6 from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and continues on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The sale will be in one of the ballrooms at the Holiday Inn Conference Center at 130 Clairemont Ave. Participating boutiques include Boogaloos, Kaleidoscope, Rockit, Squash Blossom, Worthmore Jewelers and other Atlanta area shops.

We’ll be placing a stack of Decatur Shopping, Dining and Services Guides on the Sale’s welcome table. So even if you’re not the shopping type, we’re just warning you that you’ll probably see plenty of fashionistas walking around town this weekend.

You know the drill

Since today is the first Wednesday of the month the City will be testing the tornado outdoor warning sirens at 5:00 p.m. The test should last approximately one minute.

Beginning tomorrow, Tuesday, Aug. 3, Comcast will be installing cable underground near the intersection of Clairemont and E. Ponce de Leon Avenues. To assist with the process, the City of Decatur will temporarily shut down the area that’s designated for the Marta Stop/Loading area at the corner of Clairemont and Ponce as well as two parking spots.

Comcast will be removing a section of the sidewalk where The Masonic Temple Building and the Watkins Building join. There will be approximately 80 feet of asphalt removal and restoration during the project, which should be complete by Thursday, Aug. 5. The work will be done over the course of 3 business days during the day. There will be no evening or night work.

Comcast sent a letter to all the businesses effected by the construction and we’d appreciate it if our readers could help spread the word.

The creativity of Decatur’s shop owners is a constant inspiration for me. A couple of months ago JD of Rose Squared Gallery and Framing showed me some cardboard sheep he was making for a window display. Both the sheep and the “grass” were made from recycled cardboard JD had collected from deliveries to his shop. All the sheep were auctioned off except for the one black sheep.

I encourage you to stop by Rose Squared, say hey to JD, and check out  his cardboard sheep and his artwork he makes using broken musical instruments – it’s creative and eco-friendly!

I’ve been to the New Orleans SnoBall Cafe (located next to Garlic Thai on West Ponce)  a couple of times and I’m completely hooked. The shaved ice is deliciously smooth, there’s a never-ending combination of flavors and the owners are incredibly friendly.

Have you been yet? Well, if not, this weekend is your chance because Saturday from 11a.m. to 4p.m. is their grand opening. The first 30 people will get a free t-shirt and edible goodies will include an organic frozen fruit drink, spinach dip, muffulettas, and of course snoballs. For more  details check out their website.

And for those of you who are thinking, “Who’s going to want a snoball in the dead of winter?!” Don’t worry. The owners have thought it through and will be introducing more cold weather items in the fall.

Laissez les bon temps roulez!

PAL and Dog Whisperer

Photo from The Champion

Many of you might know Jeremiah McClendon as one of the City’s PALs (Parking, Assistance, Liason), but did you also know that he’s a dog whisperer? Well, at least I think of him as a dog whisperer. He teaches dog obedience classes at the Rec throughout the year. One of our co-workers says that Jeremiah had her dog so well trained that the dog would sit as soon as he heard Jeremiah coming down the hall. That’s a good enough recommendation for me, but if you want to learn more, check out the article The Champion wrote about him.

The Decatur City Commission voted last week to adopt a new policy that provides incentives for green buildings. Construction permits which include one or more of the following components are now eligible to receive expedited permit review and possibly some public recognition:

  1. Green building certifications (LEED, EarthCraft, ENERGY STAR)
  2. Affordable and workforce housing facilities that are certified as EarthCraft House, EarthCraft Multifamily, ENERGY STAR, or LEED for Homes
  3. Solar energy for new construction projects
  4. Watersense certification for new homes

The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that buildings are responsible for 40% of energy consumption in the country. By providing incentives to build “green”, the City of Decatur hopes to encourage builders to incorporate sustainable practices which can reduce energy and water usage, improve indoor air quality, and set a positive example for the community.

Check out the entire text of the policy by clicking HERE.

If you have any questions, please contact the City’s Resource Conservation Coordinator, Lena Stevens by phone at 404-370-4102 or by email at lena.stevens@decaturga.com.

Hope you all are able to get out and enjoy on of the last weekends before school starts!
