The City of Decatur decided to defer collection of this Monday and Tuesday’s residential sanitation collection to next week.  Click HERE for more details.  This is due mainly to concerns about our smaller vehicles being able to travel safely on some residential streets and also on driveways. In addition, the recycling collection facility will not be opened tomorrow to  accept material from our contractor.

Instead our residential  sanitation crew who have not been able to work this week, reported to work today for an unusual task.  Staff gathered shovels and brooms and went to work clearing the snow and ice from the downtown sidewalks.  Check out the pictures below to see them in action.

If you have any questions about how the weather has affected city services, please call 404-370-4102.

Water Main Break

On Saturday, December 11, 2010, a water main break occurred at the intersection of E. College Avenue and E. Trinity Place.  Due to this break, various areas throughout the City of Decatur are experiencing either very low water pressure or a complete disruption of service.  DeKalb County is currently working to repair the break and restore water service to all affected locations.  We are anticipating all water services will be restored within the next 12 hours.

In addition, the railroad crossing located at E. College Avenue and E. Trinity Place is closed to all vehicular and pedestrian traffic until all repairs have been completed.  These repairs will take a minimum of 5 days to complete. A detour route has been established around the break and will remain in effect until all repairs have been completed.

There has NOT been a boil water alert issued by either the DeKalb County Board of Health nor the DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management at this time.

For further information, you may call the DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management at 770-621-7200.  Periodic updates will be provided through the DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management and at the City of Decatur website at www.decaturga.com

Standard & Poor’s Ratings Services assigned its AA+ long term rating, and stable outlook, to the Decatur City Urban Redevelopment Agency’s $12.6 million revenue bonds series 2010A.  At the same time, Standard & Poor’s raised its underlying rating (SPUR) and issue credit rating (ICR) on the city’s debt outstanding to AA+ from AA.

According to S&P’s credit analyst Richard Marino, the upgrade on the SPUR and ICR reflects what they view as the city’s demonstrated ability to effectively manage its fiscal operations and maintain a strong financial position through the last recession and the current slower-than-typical economic growth.

The AA+ rating also reflects their view of Decatur’s:

  • Diverse employment base
  • Stable and very diverse primarily residential tax base
  • Strong wealth and income levels
  • Extremely strong per capita market values and
  • Good management policies and practices

The stable outlook reflects their opinion of Decatur’s ability to “maintain its strong fiscal profile, stable tax base, and strong wealth and income levels in the next two years.”  They also expect the city’s “capable management team will continue to maintain good management policies and practices.”

The series 2010A bonds are special limited obligations of the Urban Redevelopment Agency payable from pledged revenues.  Proceeds of this issue will be used to pay all or a portion of the costs of acquiring, constructing, equipping, renovating, and improving city facilities including Fire Station #1, Decatur Recreation Center, and the Public Works facility.

The Kilowatt Crackdown Has Officially Ended

The Kilowatt Crackdown officially ended on November 30th, and I want to thank everyone who participated.  This was a new project for us, and I am delighted with the amount of community support it received.  We had 142 people sign up, and 8 neighborhoods achieved the necessary participation to compete for the prize. (See the list below). This particpation represents 2.7% of owner-occupied housing units, and 1.5% of total housing units, which includes rental and public housing.  I’ve already had representatives from other cities call me to ask for advice on how to run these types of challenges!

We will be working with our partner Earth Aid in December to ensure that data is collected for all participants before a winner is announced.  Because bill cycles vary widely, we will most likely not be able to announce a winner until late December, or early January.

Again, on behalf of the City of Decatur and the Environmental Sustainability Board, thank you all for your support and participation.  Stay tuned for more opportunities to learn about improving the energy efficiency of your Decatur home.

Small Business Saturday

Forget about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, this year is the first ever Small Business Saturday, a movement to support small businesses the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It’s essentially a partnership with American Express OPEN and thousands of communities and businesses. A number of Decatur shops are taking part and the concept goes hand in hand with the 3/50 Project we’ve been talking about.

There are a couple of ways you can partake in Small Business Saturday:

  • Shop at your favorite local businesses this Saturday.
  • Spread the word about Small Business Saturday with sharing tools on facebook.com/smallbusinesssaturday and through Twitter using the hastag #SmallBusinessSaturday
  • Give shout-outs to your favorite local shops and restaurants so your networks help the businesses you love do more business

For more information visit the Small Business Saturday Facebook page. See you around Decatur on Saturday!

bakery sign uncovered!

As many of you know, Billy and Kristin Allin are busy renovating three store fronts on the square for the new home of Cakes and Ale and the adjoining bakery.  The property owner sent me this photo of  the old bakery sign that is located in what will be the new bakery!  How fun is that?
They are hoping to keep the sign and restore the plaster work around it.  The ceiling in the bakery space is at least 15 feet high and even in the midst of demolition, it’s incredibly light and airy.
Keep tuned for more photos of this outstanding project in our city!
