I just stumbled upon this blog, Always Upward: Where Retail and Reality Meet. It’s a great read, even for those of us who aren’t in the independent retail business. And considering that there are over 150 independently owned retail businesses and restaurants in Decatur, a lot of the blog’s content can be applied to our community. In her most recent post, the author does a great job describing the emotional side of running an independent business. It helped remind me how hard our independent retailers have to work – even the ones who have been around for a while and are going strong.

Read the post and see if you don’t get a sudden sense of pride that you live/shop/work in a city with so many great indies. To keep that feeling going, check out the post I wrote on the 3/50 Project almost a year ago. Also, National Independent Retailers Week is coming up July 18-24. Spend your money locally that week and give back to the community that you love!

The text-to-vote Beach Party Window Decorating Contest ends today at 5 p.m. The winning store will be announced on stage at the Beach Party and will receive $100 from the Decatur Business Association and the Decatur Downtown Development Authority.

We’ve received over 1500 votes in the past two weeks. Click here to see how each store is doing. It looks like there are two front-runners this morning. If your favorite window isn’t one of the top two, make sure to vote before 5 p.m. today. You can vote once each hour, so there’s still time!

For those of you who haven’t seen the windows around town, check them out today before you head over to the Beach Party (see the map of participating locations on our website). You’ll be impressed by all of the creativity that went into creating the beach-themed windows.

The Decatur Downtown Development Authority and Decatur Business Association are hosting the first ever Decatur Window Decorating Contest starting this Friday, June 4.

Participating shops will decorate their windows with a Beach Party theme, and shoppers can vote for their favorite windows using a text to vote service during the next two weeks leading up to the Beach Party.

How does it work? Visit the participating shops and restaurants between June 4 and June 18. Check out their windows and vote for your favorite using the special text code found on the storefront windows. Voting is limited to one phone number per hour so technically you can vote for multiple businesses, multiple times. We’ll be updating the polling daily here so you can see how your favorite window is doing.

Visit www.decaturga.com for a list of the participating businesses and have fun!

The winning window will be announced at the Beach Party on Friday, June 18.

Local Atlanta beer connoisseurs are in luck this week. Not only is it American Craft Beer Week (May 17-23), it’s also the first annual Atlanta Beer Week (May 16-22).  Even luckier for us Decaturites, our city has a number of fine beer establishments that are joining in the festivities.

The Marlay House is hosting events every night this week including a canned beer tasting, beer trivia night, Irish music, beer and cheese pairing, a special tapping of Sierra Nevada’s imperial stout and a beer vs. whiskey night.

The Brick Store will have a ceremonial cask tapping and rare beer tasting, a cider flight night, Left Hand Brewing beer dinner, Hefe and Hotdog Humpday, a Civil Beer War, Vintage Vault Night

Leon’s is hosting a new brewery flight night, a special bottle night, Trappist Beer Night, special tapping of a Left Hand/Terrapin collaboration, beer cocktails and a Dogfish Head Bocce Ball Tourney.

Feast is hosting a beer dinner on Tuesday, May 18 featuring a few chosen selections from the Shmaltz Brewing Company.

Mac McGee’s events include Cask and Sausage, a traditional ale and stout dinner, Georgia Breweries Flight Night and a Malheur Brut Tasting.

Twain’s will be featuring three special cask ales all week starting Monday afternoon.
