I have been saying it for weeks and weeks but this Sunday I finally put my foot down…my daughter Molly needed a haircut! She has the most adorable little curls in the back, but the front was looking a little too much like Justin Bieber. Plus, it was in her eyes all the time and she was constantly getting food in it. My husband and I have been fighting the idea of cutting her hair because we have spent the first year of her life celebrating every hair on her tiny head, but enough is enough.

We popped in to Salon Red Kids and we were in heaven! Besides having the most adorable retail shop full of toys, clothes, hair bows, and whatnots-there is a kiddie salon set up in the back of the store.
Miss TJ, the hairstylist, plopped Molly into the fire engine chair and quickly secured a pink cape around her neck. She listened to what we wanted and got to work on Molly’s hair, all while keeping Mols occupied with toys and noise-makers.
At the end of the cut, she styled her up and presented me with a tiny pink draw-string bag with Molly’s first little curls. It was a perfect experience. And I haven’t even told you the best part…
IT COST $5!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Update (Friday): Good Day Atlanta on Fox featured the Boutique Sale on its Road Warrior segment early this morning. For those of you who are like me and can’t get up early enough to watch the news, check out the videos here.

Decatur’s popular Boutique Warehouse Sale starts tomorrow, Friday, Aug. 6 from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and continues on Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The sale will be in one of the ballrooms at the Holiday Inn Conference Center at 130 Clairemont Ave. Participating boutiques include Boogaloos, Kaleidoscope, Rockit, Squash Blossom, Worthmore Jewelers and other Atlanta area shops.

We’ll be placing a stack of Decatur Shopping, Dining and Services Guides on the Sale’s welcome table. So even if you’re not the shopping type, we’re just warning you that you’ll probably see plenty of fashionistas walking around town this weekend.

The creativity of Decatur’s shop owners is a constant inspiration for me. A couple of months ago JD of Rose Squared Gallery and Framing showed me some cardboard sheep he was making for a window display. Both the sheep and the “grass” were made from recycled cardboard JD had collected from deliveries to his shop. All the sheep were auctioned off except for the one black sheep.

I encourage you to stop by Rose Squared, say hey to JD, and check out  his cardboard sheep and his artwork he makes using broken musical instruments – it’s creative and eco-friendly!

I’ve been to the New Orleans SnoBall Cafe (located next to Garlic Thai on West Ponce)  a couple of times and I’m completely hooked. The shaved ice is deliciously smooth, there’s a never-ending combination of flavors and the owners are incredibly friendly.

Have you been yet? Well, if not, this weekend is your chance because Saturday from 11a.m. to 4p.m. is their grand opening. The first 30 people will get a free t-shirt and edible goodies will include an organic frozen fruit drink, spinach dip, muffulettas, and of course snoballs. For more  details check out their website.

And for those of you who are thinking, “Who’s going to want a snoball in the dead of winter?!” Don’t worry. The owners have thought it through and will be introducing more cold weather items in the fall.

Laissez les bon temps roulez!

I’m always constantly bragging about Decatur’s amazing restaurants to non-Decaturites. I love eating out in this town and I sign up for every restaurant e-news list. So, here are a couple local restaurant tidbits I’ve received this week:

Farm Burger is encouraging everyone to do a little summer reading by checking out their blog. Why add one more blog to your reader? Because Farm Burger will be posting about its harvest, discussing the differences between omega 3s and 6s, announcing when their piggies are born on their farm and other general FB happenings. I’ve already added their blog to my summer reading list and just hope they add a comments function to their blog so I can tell them how much they rock.

July is National Bison Month (who knew!?) and Ted’s Montana Grill is celebrating with its introduction of Bison Nachos (picture above), the new Red Rock Burger (covered with grated pepper jack cheese, fresh-diced jalapenos, chopped cilantro and friend onion straws) and Ted’s is bringing back “Eat Great for $8.” The return of the $8 lunch entrees include Caesar Salad with Grilled Chicken, Pulled BBQ Chicken Sandwich, Bowl of Soup and Half Chopped Salad, Meatloaf Sandwich and Delicious Duo.

Parker’s has some great daily specials: Prime Rib every Sunday, 3 course prix fixe dinner for $25 on Mondays, half price draft beer on Tuesdays, half price bottled wine on Wednesdays, lunch 3 course prix fixe meal for $13 every Monday through Friday and half price appetizers at the bar from 4 to 7 p.m. every Sunday through Thursday.

So the real question is, what are you in the mood for today? Burger? Bison? or Steak?

Hey All:

As most of you know, Billy and Kristin Allin’s wonderful restaurant Cakes and Ale will be relocating to the historic square.  They are working with Rosebriar Partnerships, the owners of the storefronts, to peel off the layers of bad 1960’s updates.  We’ve got pictures of what those buildings look like under the tarps.

Check out the cool tile roof!

Much of the original brick and beadboard trim is still on the facade.

I’m having trouble deciding what I am more excited about, the restoration of the buildings or the promise of a bakery with real bagels!  Either way, Decatur’s square will be changed forever and big Kudos goes to the Allins and Rosebriar Partnership for making this happen in our city!

I don’t have any kids and I’ve never been one to consider myself a kid at heart, but I do love fashion and lately I’ve noticed that Decatur has some pretty fashionable clothing options for kids and babies. Wiggle, a Decatur kids fashion favorite, is smack dab in the middle of its summer sale. Get the details on their Facebook page. Blue Caboose and Feather Baby are new additions to the Decatur kid fashion scene. Blue Caboose is tucked away behind Cafe Lily and Sushi Avenue on West Ponce and sells both consignment and new clothing for babies and toddlers. Feather Baby, located between Fleet Feet and Twist ‘n’ Scoot,  has adorable (I hardly ever use that word) organic clothing. And Salon Red Kids has a window full of LilliWear including the popular “Messy Girl” Reversible Dresses. I wish someone would make a reversible dress in my size! Until then, I’ll be visiting all these shops for my friends’ kids.
