Unfortunately, we had to cancel last night’s Bonfire on the Square due to rain. We wish we had time to reschedule the event but since we are so close to the Christmas holiday, we just don’t have any time. Santa is a busy guy these days, ya know?

But if you did brave the wind and rain and made it out to the Square for the last Terrific Thursday of the year, you probably ran into Santa and his elves doing a little shopping and merry-making.

Fist stop of the night was at Greene’s Fine Foods. Santa is running out of time so he needed to pick up some candy and nuts to fill all of our stockings.

Next, he was off to Squash Blossom-checking the SALE racks for a little something for the Mrs.

We convinced Santa that if he really wanted to get on Mrs. Claus’ good side, he might need to have a little bling under the tree  so off we went to Worthmore Jewelers so find the perfect gift!

Just as we were escorting Santa back to his sleigh, look at this fine group of elves we ran into outside of Vivid Boutique and Little Shop of Stories…

If you didn’t get a chance to catch up with the Big Man last night on the Square, you get one more chance tomorrow morning at the Breakfast with Santa at the Holiday Inn. Go here for tickets…but hurry, they are almost sold out!

In case you didn’t realize it, we are 9 short days away from Christmas! So that means several things…

1. You should join us tonight in downtown Decatur for the last Terrific Thursday of the year. All of your favorite shops and restaurants will have all kinds of deals, steals, and holiday treats.

2. At 7pm, you should bring the family over to the Bandstand for the annual Bonfire on the Square. Roast marshmallows and snap pics of your kids on Santa’s lap.

3. Go here, and buy your last minute tickets to Breakfast with Santa at the Holiday Inn. It’s the perfect way to start your Saturday.

4. Finally, drag out those boxes of lights and decorations and get moving! The Decorate Decatur contest is this Sunday night and those judges won’t wait for you to wrap that last strand of lights around the tree. Make sure your home is shining in all its glory and remember to turn on your lights as soon as it gets dark.

Happy Holidays Decatur!

Retail Changes

Things are always changing on the Decatur commercial business front – and this holiday season is no exception!

  • Many of you know that Wiggle, a local favorite for cute children’s clothes, is closing after the holidays. All items in the store are 30% off including toys and other Christmas gifts. We’re saddened by the closing, but are relieved that owner Kolby Sanders-Lewis is continuing Wiggle online after the holidays. Monogramming will still be available and Kolby will offer free pick-up and delivery for Decatur residents.
  • The owners of Nectar in Oakhurst are changing their health eatery into Ashram Wellness in January 2011. Ashram Wellness will offer a range of yoga classes, massage therapy and nutrition consultations. To launch the program, the center is offering a New Year’s Resolution Package, which includes a yoga class, mini massage and a 15 minute phone consultation with a registered dietitian for only $30. Contact ashramwellness@gmail.com for more information.
  • Agilest Collections is now open on the ground floor of the 127 E. Trinity office building in between Chick Fil-A and Greene’s Fine Foods. The store specializes in modern classic contemporary design, new modern design furniture and home accessories.
  • Taste has reopened on Church Street and is selling customer favorites like Tervis Tumblers, Koziol products and Hot Squeeze.

It might seem a little silly to encourage locals to shop locally online on Cyber Monday – especially when we also encourage active living (walk to your local shops, spend less time on the computer and enjoy the outdoors etc.). However, we understand that sometimes it’s just easier and quicker to purchase items online and this year some of our favorite local shops are celebrating Cyber Monday with great deals.

  • Mama Bath and Body is offering free shipping on all purchases over $50 and an additional 15% off all purchases over $100.
  • Greene’s Fine Foods has a fully operational online shopping cart and is giving a 10% discount off all internet orders.
  • Taj Ma Hound is offering 10% off all Holiday Gift Boxes and flat rate shipping on order placed now through Dec. 7.

And for those of you non-cyber shoppers, don’t forget that Santa will be walking around this Terrific Thursday after the Christmas Tree Lighting at Little Shop of Stories.
