The City of Decatur is starting a free six month shuttle pilot program on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to bring Oakhurst neighborhood residents age 60 and older to downtown Decatur thanks to a mini-grant from the Georgia Department of Human Services Division of Aging Services. The shuttle will have a trial run on March 6 and will officially begin March 13 in partnership with DeKalb County Human Development Department Office of Senior Affairs.

Several shuttle stops in Oakhurst will allow residents to come to the downtown Decatur commercial district to take advantage of services, such as grocery stores, pharmacies, medical and dental offices, public library, and government offices. It will provide access to entertainment and cultural opportunities at the Decatur Recreation Center, as well as on the square.

We are not able to stop at individual homes but have planned three stops in areas where there are large concentrations of residents aged 60 and over:

  • Oakhurst Park parking lot (Feld Ave and Leyden St. entrance)
  • Family Dollar parking lot
  • Brower St. at McClean St.

Downtown Decatur stops will be at:

  • Decatur Recreation Center/Decatur Library
  • Kroger on Commerce Dr.
  • CVS at Commerce Dr. and Ponce
  • Decatur Post Office

In order to continue the shuttle and to possibly expand it, we need to be able to show there is a demand for it. So, we would love your help to encourage Oakhurst residents to ride it. Riders must be a City of Decatur resident at least 60 years old and must register to ride the van. Registration forms can be accessed here.

We need volunteers!

For the sixth year, Decatur will host a water station for the Publix Georgia Marathon on Sunday morning, March 17.  (Yes,St. Patrick’s Day!) Decatur Active Living Board members Michael Harbin and Kelly Walsh are coordinating volunteers for the water station.  Once again, we will provide water, Gatorade and encouragement to 3,000+ marathon participants as they pass through Decatur at the halfway point in their 26.2 mile personal challenge. We need 30 volunteers to do the job properly.  The water station will be set up on Clairemont across from the Courtyard Marriott with Decatur DJ, Bo Emerson, providing the soundtrack! The music alone is worth it.  Volunteers arrive at 6:00AM and are finished about 10:30AM.  If you are up for a unique Sunday morning experience and for helping to show Decatur’s hospitality to these marathoners, email Michael at mharbin9@gmail.com for sign-up instructions. Please sign up as soon as possible.  Michael and Kelly hope to have a full crew by Friday, February 15. Thanks so much for once again helping to show our hometown hospitality.
