Due to the forecasts of high winds today and tomorrow, the City’s emergency management staff have decided to cancel the siren test for February.  Testing will resume on the first Wednesday of March at 5:00 p.m.

Tomorrow is the first Wednesday of February so we’ll be testing the tornado outdoor warning sirens at 5:00 p.m.  Should we experience inclement weather around testing time tomorrow, the test will be rescheduled for Thursday the 3rd at 5:00 p.m.

The test should last approximately one minute.

Snow Updates

Snow Day Camp at Decatur Recreation Center,  231 Sycamore Street.   Friday January 14

Decatur Parents:  If City Schools of Decatur close on Friday January 14, Decatur residents may enroll children Kindergarten through 8th grade at Decatur Recreation Center , 231 Sycamore Street, from 9:00am to 4:00pm to spend the day with Children and Youth Services staff.  Enrollment will be first-come starting at 9:00 am and limited to the first 80.  Activities will range from active group games to arts and crafts, board games and free choice activities.  A registration form will be required for all participants. No fees will be charged. All participants should bring a lunch and a snack.

Sanitation:

Sanitation & Recycling Services scheduled for Monday, Jan 10 and Tuesday, Jan. 11 have been re-scheduled for next week.

Because of the MLK, Jr. Holiday, Monday services for Jan 10 & Jan 17 will be on Tuesday, Jan 18 and Tuesday services for Jan. 11 & Jan. 18 will be on Wednesday, Jan. 19.

Sanitation & Recycling Services scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 13 and Friday, Jan. 14 will be collected as scheduled. However, sanitation employees will use their discretion in determining whether they can safely travel on driveways and side streets in order to access garbage, yard waste and recyclables. If we are unable to collect your garbage this week, it will be collected as part of the regular residential sanitation services on Thursday, January 20, 2011 and Friday, January 21, 2011. If you have an extreme circumstance, contact Public Works at 404-377-5571.

Municipal Court:

City of Decatur Municipal Court scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 11, Wednesday, Jan. 12  and Thursday, Jan. 13 have both been postponed and will be re-scheduled at a later date.

The City of Decatur Municipal Court morning sessions on Monday, January 10 have been cancelled and will be rescheduled on a future date.

Meetings:

The regular meeting of the Decatur Development Authority and the Decatur Downtown Development Authority scheduled for Friday, Jan. 14 at at 8 a.m. has been postponed until Friday, January 21, 2011 at 8:00 a.m.

The public meeting regarding the proposed Downtown Decatur National Register District scheduled for Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. at City Hall has been cancelled.  The meeting will be rescheduled sometime in February/March.  Please contact Regina Brewer at regina.brewer@decaturga.com if you need additional information.

The Zoning Board of Appeals Board meeting and Active Living Board meeting scheduled for Mon. Jan 10 at 7:30 p.m. have been canceled. The Zoning Board of Appeals meeting has been rescheduled for January 19.

The railroad crossing located at E. College Avenue and E. Trinity Place is now open for vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

On November 20th and 21st between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 3:00 a.m. the Decatur Police and Fire Departments will be assisting MARTA with an emergency preparedness exercise at the East Lake MARTA station.  The following streets will be closed during the exercise:

            -West Howard Avenue between Adair Street and Ridgecrest Avenue
            -Paden Circle between East Lake Drive and West Howard Avenue

Residents along West Howard Avenue will be allowed westbound access, but may travel no further on West Howard Avenue than Chief Matthews Road.  If you have any questions, please contact Deputy Police Chief J.K. Due to the forecasts for inclement weather today and tomorrow, the test of the outdoor tornado warning siren system will not be heard this month. The next regularly scheduled testing of the system will take place on Wednesday, December 1st at 5 p.m.

If you live in the City of Decatur and your water looks a little discolored, it may be because the Fire Department is testing all of the hydrants in the city.  This is a required mandate that Decatur undertakes annually.
