National Police Week

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation which designated May 15th as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week. This year’s National Police Week dates are Sunday, May 15, 2016 through Saturday, May 21, 2016.

National Police Week is a time to honor officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty but also a time to recognize the officers who serve the community day and night, weekends and holidays and quite often at the expense of spending time with their families.

Please feel free to post or email any words of thanks or support for me to share with your Decatur Police officers.

The Decatur Police Department will be hosting a bicycle registration at the Decatur Farmer’s Market this Wednesday, May 11, 2016 from 4pm-7pm.  The Decatur Farmer’s Market is located on the front lawn of the First Baptist Church, 308 Clairemont Avenue, Decatur, GA 30030.

Bike Registration2

Bicycles are a commonly stolen item and are not registered like vehicles. Bicycle registration includes bringing your bicycle, providing owner contact information, having the manufacturer and serial number documented and having a numbered decal applied to and a photo taken of your bicycle.

The process takes just a few minutes.  Registering your bicycle allows officers to look up recovered bicycles and contact the owner and allows for us to quickly look up the needed information about your bicycle if it were to be stolen.  The information is kept in a secured database only accessible by police department staff.

We will also register scooters that do not meet the size requirements for state tag registration.

*There is NO CHARGE to register your bicycle or scooter.

For additional information, please contact Lt. Jennifer Ross.

Do you take MARTA or walk, bike, stand or drive under the MARTA Overpass at the corner of W. Trinity Place and Atlanta Avenue on a regular basis?  Do you live or work in an adjacent neighborhood or building?  Do you love public art?  If so, plan to join us and give your input at the upcoming MARTA Mural Project Community Engagement session on Wednesday, May 11, 2016 from 6 – 8 p.m. at Ebster Recreation Center, 105 Electric Avenue.

The artists, Joey Fillastre and Felici Asteinza of MILAGROS Collective will be there.  Come meet them and hear about their work and philosophy.  Our community engagement consultant Joy Bailey Bryant with Lord Cultural Resources, Inc. and the artists have come up with some fun, creative ways to engage our collective imagination(s) as we reflect and envision what will ultimately become our community mural based on the Making History in our Region theme.
